Cranes and excavators are already working on Barcelona's future major scientific district. The Ciutadella del Coneixement is taking shape to be operational in 2031. This is the forecast of the administrations for this scientific, urban, and cultural project, which aims to turn the Parc de la Ciutadella and its surroundings into one of the main research and innovation hubs in Spain and Southern Europe. Practically everything will be up and running within five years. In fact, the rollout of this plan, considered strategic for the country, will be progressive, as the eight architectural interventions are completed. For example, the Old Fish Market, the Center for Biosciences of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the Castle of the Three Dragons, or the State Public Library.

The works to erect the future Barcelona Ciutadella Biomedical Research Park (PRBB Ciutadella) have already begun, the new hub dedicated to research in biomedical innovation and precision medicine that will be located in the oldMercat del Peix (Fish Market) of Barcelona. The forecast is that the construction of this scientific facility, which is the cornerstone of the Ciutadella del Coneixement project and the main of the three to be located at this site, will last until March 2028 and will not come into operation until the end of the same year.

The Government has reactivated this Tuesday the plans to create the hub research in biomedical innovation and precision medicine in the former Barcelona Fish Market. The Generalitat (Government of Catalonia) has announced an agreement granting the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park Consortium (PRBB) leadership in the architectural development of the new center, which is one of the cornerstones of the Ciutadella del Coneixement project. Thus, the building will be located next to Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) on land donated by Barcelona City Council.
