According to data from the survey of one million people, less than half of those affected underwent medical or surgical treatment—except in the case of glaucoma (62%)—despite the high rate of eye problems. In this context, dependence on visual aids is high: 73% regularly wear glasses and 17% wear contact lenses.

For this reason, pediatric ophthalmology experts at theIMO Grup Miranza, a leading ophthalmology clinic in Barcelona, recommends checking children's eye health from birth and annually from the age of three or four. It's more convenient to time an eye health assessment at the start of the school year to ensure children don't have vision problems that could hinder their learning.

It can appear before six months of age—known as congenital strabismus—during childhood, or, in some cases, in adulthood, due to poor control of eye muscle movement by the brain, a refractive error, low vision, or a muscular abnormality, and, more recently, due to excess eye movement. Although early diagnosis and treatment of strabismus are most advisable so that it does not affect visual development in childhood, Dr. Ana Wert, an ophthalmologist specializing in strabismus at the IMO Grup Miranza, explains that adult patients should not resign themselves to living with this problem.
