The extraordinary rainfall of recent months has filled most of Catalonia's reservoirs to their maximum capacity. The latest to reach full capacity is the Guiamets reservoir in the Priorat region. This is newsworthy because it's only the second time it has reached 100% capacity since 1978, when official records began. The first time was in May 2004, 22 years ago. This is confirmed by data from the Ebro River Basin Authority (CHE) provided to ARA by the Baix Priorat irrigation community. It's worth noting that at the beginning of December, this reservoir was only at 4% capacity, and for much of the autumn it remained at 1%. Therefore, it has gone from being empty to overflowing in just three months.

The rainy season is subsiding in Catalonia, but Civil Protection is maintaining its alert due to high river levels, and the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) is opting for controlled releases into the hydrological system, especially the Ter River, to manage water levels and ensure the safety of reservoirs—there is no mechanism in place to do so. Currently, the total capacity of Catalan water reserves has reached 92.10%, and in some cases, maximum storage capacity has been exceeded. This is the case with the Foix reservoir (100.5%) and Susqueda, which is currently at 102.5% and has once again overflowed its spillway, a sight that had become rare in the last decade. Sau is also nearing its limit (at 99%), as is Darnius-Boadella (96.4%). And a month ago, Llosa del Cavall (now at 100.9%) began in release the water through the spillwayforming a continuous cascade of 2,000 liters per second from a height of 112 meters.

This drop is equivalent to 80% of the height of the Sagrada Família or a thirty-story building. This spectacle, which lasted throughout the day, attracted local residents, who hadn't witnessed anything like it for eight years.

The heavens have opened, and now there's no way to turn them off. Since March of last year, rain has been pouring down in Catalonia, and this winter has been exceptionally rainy, with continuous and abundant downpours that offer no respite. This is an unusual situation, as this time of year is typically dry in our country. All of this has pushed the reservoirs in the internal basins above 92% of their capacity, practically full.

The episode of rain and snow that has affected much of Catalonia between Christmas Day and this Monday has caused a significant increase in river flow and, as a direct consequence, in water reserves in reservoirs. The internal basins are at 83% of their capacity, while those belonging to the Ebro basin are at 72%. These figures leave the reservoirs in a very positive situation and far removed from the situation seen in previous years. the long drought, declared over half a year ago.

Reservoirs in the inland basins have now reached 80% of their capacity. A figure unthinkable just a few months ago and not seen since July 2021. It took almost four years to reach levels that should be normal at the end of spring, and all this has been thanks to the frequent rainfall that has fallen throughout the spring. Above all, due to the extraordinary rains and snowfall in March—the wettest of the century—which have provided a lot of water and ensured a thaw that is still ongoing and continues to maintain good flow in the country's main rivers.

If you've had the feeling that it's been raining a lot lately, the data confirms it: March 2025 was the wettest of the century so far. This is according to the monthly report issued today by the Catalan Meteorological Service (SMC), which highlights that March slightly surpassed that of 2011, which until now had been the rainiest month recorded in the 21st century. It also ranks among the wettest March months ever recorded in our country, comparable to 1974.

The Baells reservoir is nearly at full capacity and began emptying water this Monday morning. The Berguedá reservoir—one of the largest in the inland basins—has experienced a spectacular rise of 40 points in less than twenty days thanks to the abundant rains in March and is now over 95%. According to sources from the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) who explained to ARA, the floodgates were not opened, but the outflow rate was increased, from 0.6 to 7.5 cubic meters (m³) per second. A scenario unthinkable just a year ago, when we were experiencing the worst of the historic drought and Baells reached rock bottom, with reserves below 19%.

March finally brought rain across the country. This is tremendous news, both for reservoirs and for forests and soils, which have suffered a lot in recent years. However, we must be cautious when talking about the end of the drought in Catalonia, because we are facing a long-distance race in which caution must come first.

It's now a reality: reservoirs in the inland basins have reached 50% of their capacity. A figure that had not been reached for almost three years—specifically, 987 days—and which undoubtedly marks a turning point in the fight against drought. The rains of the last few hours and days have given a new boost to reserves that have been growing steadily since the beginning of March, and are seeing the glass half full, accumulating a continuous increase of nearly 18 points and 345 cubic hectometers (hm³) stored. This is great news at the very beginning of the official spring, which all long-term forecasts point to a rainy season.

The rain and snowfall of recent days has kept reservoirs in Catalonia's inland basins at capacity. Reservoirs continue to rise steadily and now exceed 46% of capacity, with more than 320 cubic hectometres (hm³). In just over a week, water levels have risen nearly 14 points, the highest levels recorded since July 2022. Furthermore, rainfall will continue this week, suggesting that reservoirs will reach 50% capacity in the coming days. The current figures are more than triple those of a year ago, when the drought's record low (14.41%) was recorded.
