The bank, chaired by Tomàs Muniesa and with Gonzalo Gortázar as CEO, closed 2015 with a record profit of €5.891 billion, 1.8% higher than the previous year, according to the results published this Friday with the Spanish National Securities Market Commission (CNMV). In the last quarter, the bank's profit was €1.494 billion, 3.4% higher than in the previous quarter. "It has been a very positive year for the bank, and therefore also positive for the Spanish economy," stated the bank's CEO, Gonzalo Gortázar, during the press conference presenting the results in Valencia, where the bank maintains its headquarters – "and there are no plans to change it in the coming years" despite the Gortázar incident. "We have exceeded the expectations for the first year of the strategic plan," he noted.

The financial institution posted a net profit of €7.978 billion in the first nine months of 2025, representing a 4.7% increase compared to the same period last year, as reported this Thursday morning to the Spanish National Securities Market Commission (CNMV). These results are the first announced since the outcome of the takeover bid for Sabadell. in which only 25% of the share capital BBVA accepted the offer, which definitively derailed the operation. "Whatever we do, we do it to create value for our shareholders [...], and the best thing we can do is close the chapter on the takeover bid," said the bank's CEO, Onur Genç, at a press conference this Thursday. "We're not going to make excuses," he said. In any case, Genç regretted that it was a "missed opportunity" for both entities, as well as for investors and customers.

But with Donald Trump's arrival in the White House, the rules of the game are changing. Under the umbrella of deregulation, many analysts see a shift toward strengthening the boards of directors and managers of large companies to the detriment of small shareholders. "Donald Trump is tilting the balance of power from investors to CEOs," warned the Daily Mail in an article this week. Financial Times, one of the oracles of capitalism.

To defend it, and before it arrives the outcome of the hostile takeover that looms over the entitySabadell has used all its available artillery with the presentation this Thursday of historic earnings for the first half of the year (975 million euros), but also of the 2025-2027 strategic plan through which it promises sky-high returns (16%) in 2021 and a return of 6.3 billion euros to shareholders between now and then. It was a presentation that had a testimonial impact on the stock market, with a rise of only 0.6%. The bank is very concerned about the operation. BBVA does not plan to complete the prospectus until the end of August, so the acceptance period (for Sabadell shareholders) must be accommodated. "[The probability of BBVA's takeover bid being successful] is extremely low. Based on total and absolute conviction, it won't fly," predicted the bank's CEO, César González-Bueno. They will be able to merge for three years, with the possibility of five, BBVA will obtain "zero synergies [or cost savings]"
