The harsh words in the Westminster Parliament reflect a break with a nearly sacred convention in British politics, according to which any criticism of immediate members of the royal family has always been avoided.

This is because it calls into question the premise of its supposed moral exemplarity and transparency to the public. One more detail, however, is crucial to supporting this assertion: the strategy of distancing this black sheep of the family from the Crown has been extremely slow and calculated. It has always been in response to the events and accusations that began to surface about Andrew as early as 2010 and 2011. Buckingham Palace, first under Elizabeth II and now with Charles III as head of the family, has always acted reactively, not proactively. All of this allows us to legitimately think that a member of the royal family has ultimately been condemned to ostracism not because the monarchy acted out of ethical conviction, but out of an instinct for survival in the face of public pressure.

His words opened the special broadcast. Starting in January, the King of England will enter what the Royal Household has described as a "precautionary" phase, having "responded exceptionally well" to the therapy. The duration of this new phase will depend solely on medical judgment. In his speech, the monarch directly appealed to citizens to do their part in the fight against cancer and encouraged them to participate in public health screening programs: "Early detection is key and can transform treatment processes, giving medical teams time to respond." Charles III confessed that he knows "from personal experience" the devastating impact of a diagnosis, but also the importance of identifying the disease early. He explained that this has allowed him "to continue leading a full and active life, even while undergoing treatment." At no point, however, has he revealed the type of cancer he has had since February 2014, but sources at Buckingham Palace have confirmed that it is not prostate cancer, even though surgery at the end of January of that year detected a benign enlargement of the prostate. A few weeks after Charles III moved the British public with his diagnosis, Kate Middleton, the wife of Prince William and future queen, announced that he also had cancerAnd almost exactly a year ago, in January 2025, the Princess commented, as the King did today, that her illness was in remission.

While the woman's account – written in collaboration with journalist Amy Wallace – does not add much new information to what was already known about the behavior of Elizabeth II's third son, it does delve into a wound that continues to bleed, and crudely exposes the lack of principles of a member of the royals and, in general, of the circle of power in which he moved.

The former Duke of York agreed this Friday with King Charles III – an elegant way of saying that he was forced by the crown – to renounce all his royal titles, including that of the aforementioned Dukedom of York, after the "continued accusations" against him have become a distraction from the work of the royal family. The decision comes after a series of new scandals – or a continuation of those that have been dragging on for years – regarding the prince's relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, the deceased financier and pedophile, as well as his connection to an alleged Chinese espionage affair in the heart of Westminster.

Or at least that's what they want it to seem... After several moves, the couple has settled on Forest Lodge, an eight-bedroom house surrounded by nature and close to London that, far from providing them with the peace of mind they were looking for after her cancer, is causing them a serious backlash of headaches. It's been a long time since British citizens resignedly accepted the designs of their monarchs. Nowadays, when they see something they don't like—or, worse still: when they directly suffer from a royal decision—they come out to strongly criticize it in the media, which is where it hurts the Prince and Princess of Wales the most, the great hope of a monarchy that has been in dire straits since the anti-charismatic Charles and Camilla came to the throne.

At first, they had bristly, shiny fur, but after dipping their toes in the pool of reality, they resemble a skeletal little rat with only eyes and bones. The couple, who when they left the British monarchy in March 2020 seemed to have a promising private future ahead thanks to their supposed professional talent and social magnetism, have become over time like one of those little dogs when they get wet and reveal the harsh reality behind the pomposity of their furry coat. For the couple, who felt frustrated by the inherent constraints and limitations of the monarchy, time has shown them what we working-class people have known all our lives but that the privileged often forget: we all suffer limitations, but those with fewer resources to cope with them are always worse. Therefore, for better or worse, it was preferable to stay in the palace.

Firstly, because if you don't get it right you feel like you're a bad friend who has no idea about the tastes and needs of the loved one you're giving the gift to. And secondly, because you have to spend money that you perhaps need more than the person you're giving the gift to, and it's quite annoying to realize that, on top of that, the very thing you imagined they might find funny will end up forgotten in a drawer. That's why a good option ends up being to give a check that allows them to buy whatever they want, something that, while sad from a more romantic point of view, ends up being a good thought for everyone: easier for you and more practical for the recipient.

This is the sad reality of the 42-year-old man who knew from birth that he would end up occupying the position of Prince of Wales until he became King of the United Kingdom, a position for which that language should also be, by the way, indispensable. It is hard to believe that for more than four decades in Buckingham no one has had the multinational sensitivity to think that it would not be bad if the first-born son of King Charles III made this part of his subjects feel at least somewhat good when he went to visit them or when he gave them a speech. But we are where we are and that has not happened anymore. From now on, only patches can be made that, who knows, perhaps in the long run they will even end up working. What is clear at the moment is that his level of Welsh has not caught on much among those who speak it.
