The requirement of C2 level Catalan for new teachers will not be effective next academic year. Education has once again suspended the obligation to have this certificate due to a lack of qualified individuals who can "guarantee the right to education", as confirmed by the department to ARA. While it was announced in December that all teachers wishing to enter the teaching pool for the 2026-2027 academic year would have to prove their C2 Catalan, this Thursday a resolution published in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat goes back and modifies the linguistic conditions for interim staff.

Last Saturday, 13,068 people took the written test to obtain the higher-level Catalan certificate (C2), the official accreditation that teachers, various grades of civil servants, and language professionals need to practice their work. The surprise, for some examinees, was that after taking a break they were able to review the first part of the exam, which assesses reading comprehension and written expression, accounts for 57% of the grade, and has been eliminatory for a few editions. Vilaweb has collected complaints from some users because they consider it an irregularity that lowers the exam's requirements and gives an advantage to the examinees.

The tests to obtain a position as a teaching official and to obtain the C2 level of Catalan coincide on the same day, April 26, 2025. This would make it impossible for teachers who want to sit the exams and do not yet have this level of language to be able to take the exam in this call and would have to wait to take the C2 the following year. The paradox is that the decree on the language regime includes the obligation to have the C2 for new teachers from the 2025-26 academic year, although this is a law provisionally suspended by the TSJC. Therefore, for the moment, it is possible to work as a teacher with the C1 level but, as the C2 will end up being mandatory, many teachers had already registered.
