We have often heard that women's brains are not as good as men's in processes requiring mathematical skills, for example. Sexist statements of this kind are easy oversimplifications of an extremely complex and interesting phenomenon, which slow down research in this field. Because what is evident is that all the body's tissues are subject to the strong biological influence of these powerful molecules called hormones. If there are significant differences in the physiology of the liver, heart, or immune system between men and women, to cite a few well-studied examples, it would be very strange if the brain were the only organ that escaped their influence. A few years ago, a study was conducted that demonstrated that in humans, the male brain cannot be macroscopically distinguished from the female brain. It stirred up quite a controversy because it seemed to disprove the importance of hormones. The thing is, functional differences aren't necessarily visible to the naked eye.

In fact, A family matter It is not even a year old and already has half a dozen translations (in Catalan it is published by Edicions del Periscopi, translated by Núria Saurina, and in Spanish by Literatura Random House). A family matter It's as delightful to read as it is infuriating. It deals with great literary conflicts—love, loyalty, freedom, family secrets—but embedded within ordinary lives, with the trivial and harmless familiarity of very human and imperfect characters, and with a deceptive literary simplicity that poses moral dilemmas to the reader.

I'm so grateful my youngest is already ten, and I've been spared a lot of things, like having a mischievous elf in the house who thinks up a new prank every morning. Social media is full of pictures of this elf, and I can only breathe a sigh of relief that this trend hasn't caught on with me. How many more imported traditions will we have to adopt? We've never even made activity Advent calendars at home (does that mean our children know what the term means?). AdventAnd fewer of those calendars where there's a gift every day. That said, I admit I followed the new tradition of going to the mountains to find the Tió, and look, maybe it wasn't necessary. When I was little, the Tió knew perfectly well how to get home on its own, and on Christmas Eve it would appear very dignified in the dining room and retire the next day. Job done. So, if you haven't gone out to search for the Tió with a map, don't worry: it will find its way, just as it always has. Perhaps we're also overprotecting the Tió and don't trust its autonomy enough.

It's just the tip of the iceberg of a more complex reality in which Catalan women who want to have children are postponing the decision to become mothers for many reasons, such as the difficulties of balancing work and family life and the increase in job insecurity. Ahead delayed motherhoodMany women choose to freeze their eggs in case they decide to become mothers at an age when the chances of getting pregnant are lower. This has led to an exponential increase in the number of women preserving their fertility in this way in recent years, and consequently, to a large accumulation of eggs in biobanks where reproductive cells are stored. The reason: the law does not allow them to be destroyed when the woman wishes, an unusual circumstance that does not occur in the case of sperm, where nothing prevents a man from deciding to eliminate his reserve whenever he wants.

A translator into English of Albert Sánchez Piñol, Pol Guasch, Jaime Cabré, Jordi Nopca, and Max Besora, she now publishes her first novel in Catalan. Crazy series if you didn'tTranslated by Miriam Cano. It's a story that begins like a typical light comedy, full of nervous giggles, mothers in the park, and clueless fathers, but it soon reveals itself as a fierce satire, a scathing portrait of the fascist trap of perfection. The protagonist, Barbara, pregnant for the second time, navigates a suburban landscape that leads to organic yogurt and anxiety. All the mothers around her are impeccable, controlled, efficient; she, on the other hand, carries the feeling of being on the verge of exploding, both body and mind.

Having survived that ordeal without too many lasting effects, and while I was still very little, bad luck struck when I contracted a serious lung disease. That time, too, I was saved by the skin of my teeth because my mother summoned the doctor, who was at home in his dressing gown and slippers, on a Sunday night. That scare turned me into a pale, scrawny, and listless child. I would only eat if I was told a story while I ate. My mother took care of both with biblical patience. The situation dragged on for so long that she ended up recording cassette tapes with stories she told herself—many of them her own creations—so that, whenever it was time for a meal, my mother could use a cassette player we had, a big, black one with keys like a player piano, and give me the story along with the spoonfuls of food.

A mother of four, Riva was given a eulogy by her eldest son, Peter Riva, who spoke of "Maria's intelligence, advice, and profound human understanding." "The family finds solace in knowing that she is now reunited with her husband William, with whom she shared 50 years of marriage, her eldest son Michael, and her parents, Marlene and Rudi," Peter added, perhaps driven by a kind of irrational desire for reconciliation between his mother and his grandmother. However, judging by Maria Riva's biography, perhaps he will prefer not to find his mother in heaven, if such a place exists.

I couldn't possibly split myself in two to attend both classes—they have simultaneous meetings—and meet each of their teachers. You can imagine that, with four boys, they almost always play roughly, they're always hitting each other, and what starts as a game often ends in a huge drama. Are there siblings who calmly play chess all afternoon? Or do they make recipes with the hope of being the new Roca brothers? Well, not mine. Mine argue, get angry, and say all kinds of things to each other. And is this thing about siblings always like this? I asked, completely naively, people who have siblings.
