However, it now appears that this title could belong to someone else: a woman from León, born in 1913, claims to be the oldest woman in the country and intends to prove it by showing her ID card. The family of Teresa Fernández Casado maintains that she is 112 years old and regrets that the distinction of oldest person in the country was awarded to her. Carme Noguerawho would be a year younger than the woman from León. "My mother is the oldest person in Spain; no one else still alive was born in 1913," declares Manuela de Paz, her daughter, in an interview with EFE. She asserts that the family is unhappy because the organization Longeviquest—the ranking that validates older people globally—has confirmed that Noguera is the oldest person in the country without anyone contacting her mother to verify that the title rightfully belongs to her. Teresa Fernández Casado was born on July 29, 1913, and is a native of the village of Zambroncinos del Páramo, in León. Her daughter says that she is a woman deeply rooted in her land and has never had any interest in leaving her village: "My mother still lives in the same house where she was born," says Manuela de Paz. In fact, she is quite a personality in Zambroncinos del Páramo, where she has served as a living memory of the events of the last century. "The neighbors have always come to ask her about things, dates, or events that happened in Zambroncinos," her daughter says.

The latest thing she made, for example, is a pink blouse, although this Tuesday she chose an elegant green leather jacket. She hasn't lost her sense of humor; she's very ironic, and at the retirement home where she lives, she plays dominoes whenever she can, explain her family, who admit they still can't beat her. She spent more than three decades working as the head of a textile factory in Switzerland, fulfilling all kinds of orders, from protective gear for nuclear power plant workers to wedding dresses, and she says that every garment a dressmaker makes is important and each one has its own secret to making it turn out well. However, she's not so sure there's a secret to living a century; at least she maintains that she hasn't done anything special to achieve it: "I've always done what I wanted, I haven't taken care of myself at all. I've danced a lot and had a lot of fun."

She didn't diet either, but she survived two wars and an exile, with the nutritional deficiencies that this entails. In 117 years, Maria Branyas from Olotina never became seriously ill, and not even COVID-19 caused any symptoms. Before she died in August 2024, she learned that her cells were a decade younger than her birth date. The person who was the longest-lived in the world She knew she was special in the eyes of the scientific community and agreed to be studied by Manel Esteller, head of the cancer epigenetics group at the Josep Carreras Leukemia Research Institute (IJC), and Eloy Santos, a researcher in aging and cancer epigenetics at the center itself. It was a mystery to everyone why this woman had such an extreme life expectancy and, furthermore, with a good quality of life and good health.

Even so, the sheer number of trees and aspects to be evaluated makes it difficult to single out a single tree as the most beautiful. But in 2011, the Environmental Partnership Association (EPA) launched an annual collaborative competition to find the most beautiful tree in Europe. After the voting period closed, the trees selected for their beauty and history were revealed this Wednesday.

She is 110 years old, has a clear mind and a sharp sense of humour. At 19, she entered the Nursing School of the Republican Generalitat; she is the last of the first class of Catalan nurses to graduate almost a century ago, but she remembers everything clearly. She was working at the Hospital Clínic when the Civil War broke out and looked after civilians and soldiers in the centre's emergency room. She did so with historic doctors, such as Moisès Broggi and the brothers Joaquim and Antoni Trias i Pujol, although no hospital has been named after her. She is, however, the last survivor of that period of resistance in the streets and in the hospital: she is the oldest living person to have worked at the Clínic.
