One in particular rattled the windows of the Doctors Without Borders house like tambourines, or rather, like the clatter of zambombas, typical of these days of celebration or bombing, depending on where you happen to be born. It was the "proportional" response announced by the Israeli authorities to a Christmas Eve attack in the southern Gaza Strip that wounded an Israeli soldier. Here in Gaza, the Tió de Nadal (a traditional Catalan Christmas log) poops explosives.

The war has not only multiplied death, it has shattered the very possibility of saying goodbye. Bodies pile up in makeshift morgues, in numbered bags, in hastily dug graves. Others remain missing beneath collapsed buildings, reduced to unrecognizable fragments. In Gaza, death has lost its name.

A statement from Netanyahu's office explains that the Red Cross handed over the remains of two people who were kidnapped by the Islamist group and who, until now, were still in the Gaza Strip. Once in Israel, they will be taken to the Israel Institute of Forensic Sciences for identification. Hamas's armed wing had previously announced that it had recovered the bodies of Israeli hostages Amiram Cooper and Sahar Baruch. With Thursday's handover, 15 of the 28 deceased Israeli hostages have been released by Hamas, in addition to the 20 who returned to Israel alive. The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas included the return of all Israeli hostages, both living and deceased, but the Islamist group has insisted that it is having difficulty locating the remains of all those kidnapped who died during the war. This issue could derail the fragile ceasefire, which is already hanging by a thread, since Israel has killed approximately 200 people during the truce.

The Tel Aviv government also again banned the entry of humanitarian aid. After several bombings throughout Sunday, by night both Israel and Hamas claimed they were reinstating the ceasefire, and US President Donald Trump himself had criticized the temporary breakdown of the truce. "The ceasefire is still in effect," Trump said, noting that he does not believe the Hamas leadership was involved in the events that Israel had denounced as a reason for resuming the bombings.

As always, everything about the American president sounds superlative and triumphant. It's undoubtedly very significant that the two years of hell in Gaza are over and the last Israeli hostages have been returned, exchanged for Palestinian prisoners. The ceasefire, of course, is a relief for everyone. But it's too early, and the announcement of a brave new world sounds naive and ridiculous. Trump's egotism is neither credible nor can it hide the harsh and unstable reality. The Israeli attempt at Palestinian ethnic cleansing has been as shocking as it is unfinished: amid the rubble, Gazans have returned to their destroyed homes.
