The Prosecutor's Office is "obstructing" the judicial investigations opened into the Pegasus espionage of several Catalan pro-independence leaders. This is the conclusion reached by Amnesty International after studying the public ministry's actions in the ten ongoing judicial cases. Specifically, the organization denounces that the Prosecutor's Office has been hindering these investigations for six years. "The public ministry should support the victims, it has a vital role in protecting their rights," said Virginia Álvarez, head of investigation and domestic policy at Amnesty International in Spain.

A judge in Barcelona has formally charged two former Civil Guard directors, Félix Vicente Azón and María Gámez, for the first time in connection with the Pegasus spyware used to spy on Catalan independence, according to the EFE news agency. The case stems from a lawsuit filed by five of those affected by the spying, including businessman and former Junts senator Joan Matamala. Last September the judge accepted this lawsuit because they considered that the reported events could constitute crimes of discovery and disclosure of computer secrets and illegal access to computer systems.

The most serious political espionage in Spain's recent history is on track to go unpunished. The case Pegasus, which takes its name from the spyware developed by the Israeli company NSO Group used to infect the phones of dozens of pro-independence representatives, has gradually faded away over time, buried under the weight of institutional opacity and judicial apathy.
