Speaking of Trumpism, the photo from a few days ago of Leo Messi smiling alongside Donald Trump says it all about the values football is supposed to embody. The most trollish elements of the Catalan right delude themselves into thinking they've won something and erupt in tavern chants, because their weakness only allows them to project their insecurities onto the pitch of a stadium.

They use euphemisms such as "You know who", the "you know who", or "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named"He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named." At the 98th Academy Awards, Donald Trump became the Lord Voldemort of cinema. Everyone was aware of him, alluding to him through subtle jokes, but never, ever, was his name uttered. At the opening, host Conan O'Brien seemed to justify the celebration in such a turbulent and violent time: "We celebrate, not because we think everything is going so well, but because we hope everything will get better." Alluding to Trump's penchant for renaming buildings after himself, he remarked that the Dolby Theatre, which housed the awards, could end up being called "The I Have a Small Penis Theatre." Jimmy Kimmel, the host who was temporarily removed from his job, commented on the incident. late night For making jokes about Trump, he referenced the lack of freedom of expression when awarding the prize for best documentaries. "There are many countries where their leaders don't respect freedom of expression, for example, North Korea and CBS," he said, pointing to Trump's obvious pressure and the tensions with the major television networks. "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" hovered over the ceremony like an energy that transformed with pacifist demands and messages in favor of multiculturalism.

The images were born as a testimony of a reality even before there was any intention of turning them into a film project. Initially, the purpose of these recordings was different. But a turning point changed its destiny, almost as a consequence of the perplexity experienced by the person recording the images. The protagonist is Pavel Pasha Talankin, a primary school teacher in the city of Karabaş, in the heart of industrial Russia, in the mountainous Ural region. The town is famous because UNESCO declared it the most toxic place on Earth. The life expectancy of its inhabitants is 38 years. Pasha is the coordinator of school events and the cameraman for everything that happens there. A dynamizer of the cultural life of the center, much loved by the students. He explains how his work changed drastically in February 2022, with the invasion of Ukraine, when a guideline with the new federal patriotic education policy arrived at the school. Since then, students have to present the flag and march like soldiers every morning, sing the anthem, and recite patriotic speeches. Teachers have to preach lessons in classrooms that are pure propaganda without any academic basis. Pasha is obliged to record everything and upload the images to government databases to demonstrate that the school respects the orders of Putin's regime. The camera becomes a witness to the entire indoctrination process. The hours that Pasha previously dedicated to students, he now spends in the service of propaganda. The contrast between before and after the Russian invasion shows us how life in Russia has transformed and how fear, censorship, and oppression are imposed. We not only see how the protagonist's mood changes, but also that of his students and former students. There are very moving scenes about the impact of the war on their lives. The possibility of providing all the recorded material to a documentary filmmaker beyond the Russian border is what motivates Pasha to continue. He becomes this Mr. Nobody from the title who fights Putin from absolute humility, from the logic of his work, from affection for his students, love for his country, and his democratic convictions. "I think what you've done will have a big impact," a voice tells him over the phone. And so it is. Mr. Nobody is on the verge of winning an Oscar in Hollywood by showing the abyss into which the Russian educational system, and therefore Russian society, is sinking. He always does so with a sense of humor born from pain and from the most grotesque scenes that absolutisms provoke. It is a documentary that will resonate with teachers and can be a good antidote for all those young people who are fascinated by the far-right.

During this part of the ceremony, a video is projected that presents images of the deceased accompanied by music, with the purpose of paying tribute to them for their contribution to cinema, whether as actors, directors, producers, technicians or any other key role within the industry. In this year's tribute appear, among others, Gene Hackman, who was recently found dead with his wife, Betsy Arakawa; David Lynch; Maggie Smith, and the composer and producer Quincy Jones. The moment, one of the most emotional of each Oscar gala, has not been free of controversy this year due to some high-profile absences.

We hope it will be to gain momentum for the centenary. In a politically turbulent time, in a war context in which the United States has a lot to say, in a situation in which some citizens are losing rights and freedoms, the great Hollywood ceremony chose to look at its navel and have a peaceful party. Conan O'Brien was a disciplined master of ceremonies, somewhat outdated and with overacted jokes. The best of the night, his appearance from inside Demi Moore's body in The substance. Despite promises to go to work, his interventions could have been reduced by half. "If you're still putting up with this, you have Stockholm syndrome," he said in the final stretch, ignoring the show. Even the initial tribute to the city of Los Angeles, devastated by fire, was discreet and with a special concession to the city's firefighters. Guests who will not cause any fires. This year, the musical performances were the crutch on which to sustain the show. A showy, but very boring proposal, which contributes to maintaining that low profile. The sugary start with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo set the tone for the night, dull and predictable. They were not original even when choosing the music to accompany the video of the deceased. Requiem Mozart is very nice, but at a film gala it betrayed little desire to rack one's brains. The political mentions were brief, at the opportune moment and without stridency. Even the ambient sound of the room seemed under strict control.

Because at the Oscars it is important that everyone is dressed appropriately. But what does "appropriately" mean to Hollywood? Well, as has been made clear tonight (and at all previous galas), that fashion continues to legitimize the difference between men and women. While men are almost uniformed in black tuxedos to add rigor to the event, women, with sequins and silk, are the necessary decoy to embellish it. Or, if not, let us consider whether the red carpet, with as much or more echo than the awards themselves, would have such an audience without the actresses and their spectacular outfits.
