This happened in the 2013, 2017, and 2022 editions. In fact, they had only reached the semifinals once in the tournament's history, in 1997, but the format was different back then, and this round involved reaching the semi-finals directly from the group stage. In other words, Spain had never won a Euro Cup knockout match until this Friday, when the team led by Aitana Bonmatí, from Sant Pere de Ribes, and Claudia Pina, from Montcada i Reixac, defeated the host nation, Switzerland, 2-0, in Bern. It was their two moments of brilliance that decided the match.

Seven minutes later, another. And so on, to five (5-0). The world champions debuted at the European Championship with the best of news, a resounding thrashing of Portugal. It wasn't just the goals from Esther González (2), Vicky López, Alexia Putellas, and Cristina Martín-Prieto; it was also the feeling of superiority and unity of a team that is clearly the favorite to win the title. The only thing they are missing after winning the World Cup and the Nations League.

During the medal ceremony, the president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, kissed the mouth of ex-Barcelona player Jennifer Hermoso, one of the players who had started in the final. The action took everyone by surprise, including the footballer herself. "It is a situation of abuse of power of a sexual nature," says Marta Roqueta, a doctoral researcher at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC) who is an expert in gender perspective.
