From this Tuesday, the Jaume Bofill Foundation will cease to have a name linked to the philosopher and jurist Jaume Bofill Bofill and from now on will be called Equitat.org. As the entity has communicated, after 57 years they have decided to make a change to make clear "the mission of the foundation". From the entity they explain that with the change the mission is incorporated into the name "to explicitly claim quality education and real opportunities for everyone in a context of greater social complexity and polarization".

"Today, more female students can share a classroom with classmates from their neighborhood than in the past." This was one of the conclusions presented this Thursday by the director of the Bofill Foundation, Ismael Palacín, at the presentation of the study. The charter school today. Unlike what the data showed just a decade ago, today, six years after the National Pact against Segregation, the system is beginning to see a significant improvement, especially with the change in the role of a large part of the subsidized schools.

The founder of the UNESCO Center for Catalonia and first director of the Bofill Foundation, Fèlix Martí, died this Tuesday. Born in Barcelona in 1938, Martí was a philosopher and professor, associated with various organizations dedicated to peace, dialogue, freedom, and interfaith respect. His career was marked by his democratic opposition to Franco's regime, to the point of being imprisoned for a month and a half and convicted for facilitating the publication of democratic publications.

One of the many demands of the education sector is the implementation of measures to prevent excessive turnover of teachers who change schools. After years of constant competitions, lack of teachers in various subjects and of changes in the teachers' pool, this Tuesday the Bofill Foundation published a figure that shows the magnitude of the instability in Catalan educational centers: half of the teachers in primary school teaching staff have been replaced in five years (with data from 2018 to 2023).

Being a child of immigrant origins makes it harder to pursue a satisfactory educational path, with a secondary school diploma and formal post-compulsory education. In Catalonia, for example, three out of ten adolescents of immigrant origin drop out of school prematurely, three times that of young people of Spanish nationality, and the case of Roma students is particularly flagrant, with a dropout rate exceeding 80%. Miguel Jiménez, Hatim Azahri, and Déguène Eufemia Seck are three young people who have experienced these abuses firsthand, but, despite the difficulties, have managed to move forward: they have completed university studies and now work as activists to ensure that new generations have more opportunities. Roma students as problematic, which means they no longer dedicate themselves with the same effort, and it generates frustration and a very low self-perception among us Roma, which reproduces this stigma," explains Miguel Jiménez, member of the Fundación Secretariado Gitano. And, speaking of his experience, he adds: "I'm from Terrassa, 4th year of ESO, a teacher looked me in the eyes and told me and to make it clear that I was here, in class, and from then on I started studying, first a higher degree and then social integration at university." However, Jiménez points out that there is still a lot of work to be done because now, when he wants to enroll his daughter in school, he has seen how the community.

The Department of Education is in breach of the pact against school segregation it promoted alongside with the Catalan Ombudsman two years ago, one of the main problems of the education system. Although the agreement makes it clear that the administration has to protect "complex" centres, where students come from more disadvantaged backgrounds, the Generalitat assigned 6,101 children to these schools after the start of the 2019-20 academic year, a practice considered harmful for schools. In fact, one in three students who requested a place halfway through the year ended up in a "ghetto school", that is, a school with a much higher concentration of foreign students. The non-compliance is so great that 83% of "complex" schools in Catalonia enrolled students after the beginning of the year, which is explicitly forbidden by the pact and aggravates these schools' situation, according to a study by the Fundació Bofill.
