Although the new PP leader, the Galician Alberto Núñez Feijóo, had been more moderate on issues such as language immersion in Catalonia, this Thursday he has gone back to the terms of his predecessor, Pablo Casado, and claimed that in Catalan schools there is "a linguistic apartheid", words that Casado himself pronounced in December last year. In an interview with Onda Cero, Feijóo has accused the Spanish Government of being "the guarantor of a breach of the law" and has criticised the PSC for being complicit with the independence movement by signing the new law on Catalan in the classroom. This law received support from ERC, Junts, En Comú and the socialists. Feijóo believes the Spanish government should present an appeal before the Constitutional Court to suspend this decree.

Heads of 5,000 Catalan schools already know how they ought to respond to the ruling demanding 25% of classes be taught in Spanish. The Department of Education has sent them instructions via e-mail to inform them on how to enforce the decree passed on Monday in which the Government explicitly rejects the application of percentages in the use of languages in schools. This email to directors has a double goal: on the one hand, to reassure teachers and management teams and to try to protect them legally, since the Government would be responsible for the legality of every school's linguistic projects; on the other, to convince the Catalan High Court that it is not disobeying the ruling, but that the Catalan Government – albeit disregarding percentages – wishes to regulate the use of languages.

Under 48 hours before a new day of industrial action in state schools, head teachers from 300 schools have signed a letter addressed to Catalan Education minister Josep Gonzàlez-Cambray, to which ARA has had access, in which they warn that the situation in schools is "unsustainable": "There is a real risk that the whole public education system will collapse and the functioning of state schools with minimum quality standards will no longer be guaranteed". The statement asks the minister for "measures not words" after "repeated" demands made by schools to the Department.

The second year at public nursery schools will be free of charge as of September, while annual fees will be reduced by €800 in private kindergartens. Catalan Education minister Josep Gonzàlez-Cambray signed an agreement this morning with two organisations representing local city councils and three employers' associations of early childhood education, guaranteeing the government funding for these places until 2025, that is to say, until the end of this Parliament.

At the beginning of the second of industrial action planned in schools, Catalan Education minister Josep Gonzàlez-Cambray has appeared to announce that schools will be allowed to postpone changes to the curriculum across primary and secondary school. The Catalan Government will pass the decrees but schools will be able to decide whether to apply the changes in September 2021, or wait until next year.

The discomfort of the educational community with the department has escalated rapidly since the announcement last week of the changes in the school calendar. The decision that the next school year will start a week earlier and with an intensive school day throughout September without any previous debate has caused the teachers' unions to explode, and this Thursday they have occupied the headquarters of the Department of Education and threaten to stay until the consellerjosep Gonzalez-Cambray, receives them and commits to reverse the changes. Shouting "Cambray, resign", the unions criticize "the opacity" of the Govern and, beyond the discrepancies with the measure, they are annoyed by how and when the measure has been announced, skipping the participation bodies such as Catalonia's School Council.

Catalan is in clear decline in the classroom and is spoken less and less. "We want to reverse this situation and we want to do it now, we have to take action", said the Catalan Minister Josep González-Cambray this morning, during the presentation of the data and a new action plan for the promotion of Catalan in the classroom. "We are entering a new stage in language policy", said the Catalan Minister of Culture, Natàlia Garriga, who also appeared to explain that the promotion plan will be carried out not only by the Department of Education, but in a cross-cutting manner with all the Government's departments. "I don't want to be alarmist: the Catalan language has weaknesses, but it also has opportunities", said Garriga.

The new attempt by the Catalan Government to withdraw subsidies for the eleven single-sex schools in Catalonia has caused a stir in the education sector. In spite of the fact that the Education Department had already announced its intention three years ago, the approval of the new education law has opened a new crack that establishes schools supported "partially or totally with public funds" must develop "the principle of coeducation in all educational stages" and "will not separate the pupils by gender". However, as this part of the law is being examined by the Constitutional Court, which is yet to rule, schools and families are confident that the announcement will not have consequences and that the court will overrule it again. For the affected families, withdrawing the subsidies is an "attack on plurality and diversity".

Despite the fact that it is a public holiday in the work calendar because it is Columbus Day -which in Spain is celebrated as "el día de la Hispanidad", "Hispanity Day"), the Catalan Government wanted to hold its traditional Tuesday meeting of the executive council to show that, on a day like today, it has "nothing to celebrate". In the subsequent public appearance, an important agreement was reached: the Generalitat has announced that it will not definitively renew the agreement with schools that segregate by gender. "In the 21st century there can be no public funding for schools that continue to separate boys and girls in the classroom. Segregation increases stereotypes and legitimises sexism", justified the Catalan Minister of Education, Josep González-Cambray.
