For example, when they are related to health, education, judicial proceedings, job selection processes, access to financial aid, and border control. From next August, AI-based systems will have to undergo a prior assessment to be used in the EU. However, the regulation does not specify how this assessment should be carried out, and Catalonia has developed a model that has already been adopted by the Basque Country, Croatia, Malta, and Brazil.

"In five years we have seen an explosion in the repression of free speech". These two sentences are by Carles Torner, until recently executive director of the PEN International Club, and correspond to the interview that opens the Culture section. Torner can provide the global overview that the position he has held for seven years gives him, especially on freedom of expression and the serious problems faced by many writers. But he is not alone. He has encountered a generalised outburst that pushes back against fundamental rights, whose starting point he places in Donald Trump's election victory in 2016

The Procicat has met to finish polishing the details of the resolution which will be approved on Friday, as explained at a press conference after the executive council.
