"Many English, Germans and other neighbours were surprised by the fire while fleeing. They saw the flames and wanted to escape. Some took alternative roads... Entire families have died carbonized inside the car", explains Julia with a choked voice. She is one of the people evacuated from Bédar, one of the municipalities most affected by the fire that has been burning since this Friday in Los Gallardos, Almeria.The fire, which has left at least 12 people dead and 23 missing, surprised some neighbors as they fled the flames, according to this neighbor's account to Efe. She explains that many of the affected homes are isolated in the mountains, where numerous foreigners reside. In her case, the smell of burning wood was the first alarm signal: "I was talking to my neighbor and suddenly we saw a very large curtain of smoke behind her house".

Almeria has been experiencing one of the worst fire tragedies in the State since this Thursday. Twelve people have died and twenty-three remain missing due to a serious forest fire in Los Gallardos, which has burned nearly 4,000 hectares. A figure to which at least eight injured must be added, four of whom are serious and hospitalized for burns. Data that makes it the third deadliest forest fire recorded in Spain, for now behind that of Lloret de Mar in 1979 and that of La Gomera in 1984.

The meteorological conditions in the area of the Bisbal d'Empordà fire have been very adverse for most of the hours it has been active. The fire broke out this Friday at 12.40 at the bottom of a ravine and up to 75 crews (60 ground and 15 air), have moved to try to contain the flames' advance. The fire started in the area of Can Manel, at the bottom of a ravine, and the wind helped it spread rapidly towards an area surrounded by scattered housing developments, farmhouses and a golf course. Civil Protection has evacuated around 350 people because of the smoke.
