Musician Sonny Rollins, a legendary jazz saxophonist, passed away this Monday at the age of 95 at his residence in Woodstock, New York, as reported by his publicist Terri Hinte in a statement, which was picked up by the Efe agency. Known as the Colossus of the Saxophone, Rollins developed a jazz career that spanned several decades and had its most productive period in the fifties, when he accompanied masters of the genre such as Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, and Miles Davis. During that time, Rollins also recorded his most important albums.

L’Hospitalet de l’Infant will become from May 29 to 31 the epicenter of jazz in Catalonia with the celebration of the first edition of Hospi Jazz, a new festival promoted by the Department of Culture of the Vandellòs and l’Hospitalet de l’Infant City Council, which is born with the aim of consolidating itself as a reference cultural event on the Costa Daurada. For three days, this town will host concerts and activities mainly dedicated to classic jazz and dixieland, with the participation of prominent bands from the Catalan and Spanish jazz scene.

Johan Grimonprez has woven a vibrant historical documentary about the coup d'état suffered by Patrice Lumumba's government in the Republic of Congo, with the Cold War in the background. The author measures the threads that linked the dreams of fraternity and federation in postcolonial (or should we say neocolonial?) Africa with the political struggles and Afro-American cultural expressions committed to civil rights in the United States, where laws still discriminated against the black population. And, in passing, he livens up the exercise of colonial memory with pieces by Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane and Miles Davis.
