Eva Marie Saint, who died at her home in Los Angeles at 97 years old from natural causes, was an actress of dramatic prominence and defiant beauty who worked with all the great names of her era: Marlon Brando, Alfred Hitchcock, Paul Newman, Elia Kazan, Cary Grant, Elizabeth Taylor, Gregory Peck... A career that spans seven decades of film history but which shone especially in the 50s, when she debuted with On the Waterfront, a masterful face-to-face with Brando that earned her the Oscar, and also when in 1959 she starred with Cary Grant in Hitchcock's classic North by Northwest.

The writer, essayist and literary critic Dolors Oller passed away this Friday, as reported by the mayor of Girona, Lluc Salellas, through social media. A graduate in philosophy and letters and with a doctorate in Romance philology, Oller dedicated her entire professional career to studying and teaching literature, as well as promoting it and cultivating it with volumes of poetry and essays such as La construcció del sentit (Empúries, 1986) and Virtuts textuals: Una tipologia de paraula poètica (1990). Oller was the life partner of the writer Narcís Comadira.

Gonzalo Suárez (Oviedo, 1934-2026) has died at 92, leaving behind one of the most singular trajectories in Spanish cinema of recent decades. The Asturian writer, journalist, and film director was recognized with the 2026 Honorary Goya for his ability to experiment with all genres and transgress the limits of conventional narrative. “I am very happy with this award because it covers my entire body of work, although I regret that it does not catch me making films. I would like to say action and cut again because cinema is action,” said this multifaceted professional when he received the Goya in Barcelona.

The writer and theater critic Marcos Ordóñez has died at the age of 69. Author of a score of books –including essays, memoirs, and fiction–, Ordóñez worked for decades as a theater critic. He worked at El Correo Catalán (1983-1985), ABC (1987-1991), Avui (1994-2000) and for the last 21 years for the newspaper El País, until he retired in 2021 due to health problems.

Music promoter Guim Cifré has died this Wednesday in a traffic accident at the age of 34. Highly esteemed among Barcelona's jazz community, he was artistic programmer at the Milano Jazz Club, on Ronda Universitat in Barcelona, and just this week he was beginning a new chapter at the helm of the renovated Jazzsí in the Raval.

"I was born among sheep and the sheep give me freedom". This is how Marina Vilalta, from Ripoll, summarized the spirit that had led her to be the longest-active shepherdess in Catalonia. Born into a very humble family in Solanguit (Ogassa), at the foot of the Taga, almost a century ago, in 1927, she passed away this Sunday night into Monday at 99 years old, as confirmed by her family. Until her final days, she continued to lead her flock of Guirra sheep in the village of Bruguera (Ribes de Freser), on the other side of the Taga, in sun, rain, or snow. In 2022, ARA interviewed her on a rainy autumn day while she was grazing, shortly after she received the Creu de Sant Jordi for being an "example of the importance of work in the rural world, and of the resilience of the people who dedicate themselves to it".

Josep Maria Trias de Bes i Serra, a politician with a long career in Catalonia, passed away this Thursday at the age of 81 and the farewell ceremony will be held this Saturday at the Sant Gervasi funeral home (Barcelona). An anti-Franco militant—he was part of the PSUC and participated in the 1966 'Caputxinada'—he first pursued a political career in the Democratic Convergence of Catalonia (CDC) and, later, in the People's Party (PP). With the party led by Jordi Pujol, Trias de Bes was a member of the Congress of Deputies from 1980 to 1993 and, even became vice president of the Spanish lower house, when CiU was relevant for maintaining the PSOE's majority at La Moncloa.

The founder of La Fageda, Cristóbal Colón Palasí, has died this Thursday at the age of 77, as family sources have explained to the ARA. A psychologist by profession, he launched the La Fageda project in 1982 as a rehabilitation tool for people with mental illnesses. Colón Palasí, born in 1949 in Zuera (Saragossa), held the presidency of La Fageda until March 2024, at which point he stepped down from his executive duties and was named honorary president.

Manel Dueso, actor, director, playwright, and poet with an extensive and prestigious theatrical curriculum, has died this Tuesday at the age of 73 as a result of cancer. He performed and directed more than a hundred plays by authors such as Shakespeare, Chekhov –his great predilection–, Molière, and Beckett, among many others, and wrote more than twenty plays, a production that validates him as a first-rate stage animal. As an actor, he was a well-known face thanks to such popular series as La Riera, Nit i dia, Cuéntame, Isabel, El cor de la ciutat, Secrets de família and Laberint d'ombres, and in cinema he worked under the direction of directors such as Jaume Balagueró (Mientras duermes) and Manuel Huerga (Salvador).

Former Minister of Agriculture and former mayor of Mollerussa Josep Grau has died this Tuesday evening at the age of 80, as confirmed by the city council of the capital of Pla d'Urgell. Born in the same city on November 8, 1945, he was a minister between 1999 and 2003, mayor from 1987 to 1999, and a member of Congress between 1993 and 1994. He also held other positions of responsibility, such as president of the Lleida Provincial Council between the years 1990 and 1999 or president of the Catalan Association of Municipalities and Regions (ACM) between 1996 and 1999. The City Council of Mollerussa, led by mayor Marc Solsona, has "deeply" regretted the passing and thanked Grau for his years of dedication to the municipality.

One of the great names in Catalan cinema and theater, Francesc Garrido, died this Sunday night at the age of 56, as confirmed by the actor's circle to ARA. Garrido was known for his roles in films such as Smoking room, Mar adentro and Balandrau, vent salvatge, and series such as La sala, Vida privada and Jaguar. He also had a solid theater career, with notable performances in productions such as Àlex Rigola's a propòsit d'The Master and Margarita, by Bulgakov; The Video Nobody Sees, by Martin Crimp, under the direction of Carme Portaceli; The Alchemist, the adaptation that Michael De Cock made of Opus nigrum by Marguerite Yourcenar, as well as participating in different works by Shakespeare, Chekhov, and Ibsen.

Yayoi Kusama, one of the most unique and radical creators of recent decades, died on August 14 at the age of 97 in a Tokyo hospital, as reported by her website. According to the statement, which does not specify the cause of death, Kusama painted until her final days, she never put down her brush, obsessed with exploring and finding harmony and collective healing, beyond differences. This will sustained her from the Vietnam War era.

Singer-songwriter Dolly Parton died this Tuesday at the age of 80. This was announced by her family in a video shared on social media. A country music legend and one of the most iconic artists of her generation, Parton leaves behind a legacy that includes songs like Jolene and I will always love you. A few days ago, the singer herself explained to People magazine that she had to cancel some concerts due to health problems she had neglected while caring for her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, who died in March 2025 at the age of 82. Unfortunately, she didn't make it.

The musician Delfín Amaya (Oviedo, 1954 - Barcelona, 2026) died on Sunday at the age of 74 in Barcelona, according to the Europa Press agency. Delfín Amaya formed the duo Los Amaya together with his brother José (A Coruña, 1952) in the 70s in Barcelona. Both of Romani ethnicity and relatives of the dancerCarmen Amaya, they became one of the main exponents of Catalan rumba thanks to a musical proposal that combined tradition with more contemporary sounds of the genre and fusion with pop melodies and electric guitars. The duo will always be remembered for songs like Vete and for having performed at the closing ceremony of the Barcelona Olympic Games.

American actress Hayden Panettiere died this Sunday at the age of 36, according to sources close to her confirmed to People magazine. The family has not reported the cause of death and has requested privacy while the circumstances are investigated. American media, however, detail that according to recordings from the health services that attended her at her home in Greenville, South Carolina, Panattiere would have suffered an overdose and cardiac arrest. Nevertheless, the preliminary police investigation rules out that the death is due to "suspicious circumstances".

The guitarist Pepe Habichuela, a giant of flamenco music from one of the great lineages of cante, has died in Madrid at the age of 82, as reported by El País and confirmed by the delegate for Arts of the Madrid City Council, Marta Rivera de la Cruz. "Pepe Habichuela's guitar is fading, but his music will continue to play wherever flamenco continues to tell who we are," the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez posted on X.

The actor Manolo Solo, one of the most versatile and solid performers in Spanish cinema, died this Thursday from cancer at the age of 62, according to the Spanish Film Academy. Solo won the Goya for best supporting actor in 2017 for the thrillerTarde para la ira, by Raúl Arévalo, and was also nominated as a supporting actor for El buen patrón, Cerrar los ojos and B, la película, and as a lead actor for Una finca portuguesa, for which he was also nominated for a Gaudí. A chameleon-like performer, he could disappear into his characters and navigate from comedy to drama with the security and solidity of gifted actors.

The Irish singer Glen Hansard, who in 2007 won the Oscar for the song Falling Slowly –written for the soundtrack of the film Once–, has died at the age of 56 in a motorcycle accident in Lucan, west of Dublin, as reported by the BBC. Hansard was one of the protagonists of the film The Commitments (1991) and led his own rock band, The Frames, before triumphing with Once, starring Hansard himself and Markéta Irglová, who were also authors of the soundtrack as members of The Swell Season, a folk group that recorded three albums.

Kavinsky, one of the most international figures in French electronic music, known primarily for the massive success of his track Nightcall –included in the soundtrack of the film Drive (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2011)–, has been found dead by the French police at his home in Paris, as reported by the French newspaper Le Parisien. Police are investigating the possibility that the death is a consequence of a stroke, as in preceding days the musician had suffered very intense headaches. Vincent Belorgey, his real name, was one of the stars of the closing ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games, where he performed a version of Nightcall with the French band Phoenix and the Belgian singer Angèle.
