After so many days of sun and atypical summer heat, this week will finally be more autumnal and unsettled. The retreat of the anticyclone has allowed for an increase in instability at high altitudes which, together with the entry of humid winds from the sea towards the land, has left the first showers this Monday. But the main event will arrive on Tuesday, when there will be a round of downpours and storms that may leave the classic torrential rains of late summer and early autumn, fueled even more by sea water that is warmer than it should be. There are many regions on alert for intense rain, especially on the coast, the pre-coastal area, and the northeast. Furthermore, the weather will remain unsettled all week. Temperatures will drop and it will be less hot in general.

The weekend has been marked by fairly calm weather, with temperatures that have been dropping and which yesterday did not exceed 31 ºC in the warmest areas of Ponent and the Ebro valley. Values are still very high for this time of year, but nothing like the nearly 38 ºC of previous days. After so many days of anticyclones and atypically summery heat, this coming week promises to be much more unsettled and cooler, with rain that will end up making an appearance in practically every part of the country throughout the days, and thermometers that will continue to drop. It seems that autumn, now yes, wants to make itself truly felt.

The heat peaked this Friday with maximums of up to 37.4 ºC at the Riba-roja reservoir and 37 ºC in Vinebre (Ribera d'Ebre) and Aldover (Baix Ebre), but this weekend has started with less heat and the maximum values have remained around 32 or 33 ºC. This Saturday we already noticed an increase in thin clouds, a situation that will repeat on Sunday, when we will also have low coastal clouds. The coming week looks more unsettled and cooler, although still with a generally mild atmosphere.

The heat peaked this Friday with an atypical temperature spike that left values more typical of the height of summer than the first days of autumn, especially in the south and in Ponent. Unchecked heat that reached up to 37.4 ºC at the Riba-roja reservoir and 37 ºC in Vinebre (Ribera d'Ebre), or 37 ºC also in Aldover (Baix Ebre). Furthermore, 35 ºC was exceeded in areas of Ponent, and 34 ºC in parts of the northeast, the Priorat, and the Pre-Pyrenees of Lleida.

Pay attention today to the temperatures, as they will hit a ceiling, with rampant heat that is completely out of place for these dates. The most notable rise will be experienced in inland areas and in the south of the country, with an environment that will be more typical of the peak of summer than of early autumn. Maximums may locally reach 38 ºC in the interior of the Ebro, and the breaking of some heat records cannot be ruled out, for example, in the Pyrenees and the Pre-Pyrenees. The mercury will drop over the weekend, but the environment will remain too warm for the time of year. All this with continued sun and anticyclonic calm, while waiting for the weather to start changing next week.

Autumn arrived yesterday, but the atmosphere remains very warm and atypically summery in the middle of the day. On Wednesday, many maximums of 27 to 33 °C were recorded again, reaching 34 °C in Ponent and the Ebro valley. And pay attention because between Thursday and Friday, thermometers will rise again and a new heat peak will occur, with values that are runaway for this time of year. Only at night will we remember that we have already entered autumn, as the coolness will be maintained due to the fact that the nights are getting longer, which allows the thermometers to drop for more hours. In fact, today we wake up to an even cooler atmosphere everywhere. All this with sun and calm thanks to the powerful anticyclone that embraces a large part of Europe. The weather maps do not predict changes until next week.

At 02:05 a.m. we officially entered the astronomical autumn. We are changing seasons, but not the weather, since, although we are waking up to cool temperatures in general, today will remain warm with summery air and radiant sun in the middle of the day. An anticyclonic calm that will accompany us for a few more days, as no significant changes are seen until at least next week. Therefore, we will continue for many more days with thermometers above average. Yesterday, summer said goodbye with temperatures that again exceeded 30 °C in many regions, especially in the northeast and inland. In fact, in the interior of the Ebro, temperatures were around 35 °C for another day.

With two days left until the official arrival of astronomical autumn, we still have to talk about temperatures more typical of summer than of these dates. Minimum temperatures have recorded the typical drop in recent days due to the shortening of daily daylight hours, with a significantly cooler environment at night and in the early morning, especially inland and in the Pyrenees. Maximum temperatures, on the other hand, continue to rise. Yesterday they climbed back above 33 ºC in the interior of the Ebro and in the Priorat. And this Monday there will be a heat peak, with many maximums of 30 to 35 ºC throughout the country. Although the mercury will fall back a little on Tuesday, temperatures will remain above average throughout the week, along with anticyclonic calm.

During this weekend and the coming days the weather will be identical, with some exceptions. Temperatures have normalized and only towards Monday will they be able to rise a little in the West. Apart from sun, some morning fog and some thin clouds, the arrival of weak north and northwest winds will stand out, but little else.

Yesterday, remnants of instability were still seen in some sectors of the territory. In the morning, some downpours falling over the sea brushed the coast of Barcelona and left some local showers and, even, some isolated flooding in the seaside neighborhoods of the Catalan capital itself, where in a few minutes more than 10 or 15 l/m² accumulated. They were very local and anecdotal phenomena that ended up clearing away completely.

The weather has clearly improved over these last few hours, leaving behind Wednesday's heavy storms and downpours. However, instability has persisted, with frequent cloud intervals and remains of some scattered, local, and weak showers in parts of the coast and pre-coast –especially in Barcelona– and in the northeast. It is not completely clear yet, and this situation will repeat today, without ruling out some very local morning downpour by the sea, as has already happened this morning in the seaside neighborhoods of the city of Barcelona, where localized flooding has occurred. In some neighborhoods, locally, more than 10 or 15 l/m² have been exceeded in a few minutes due to these showers over the sea that occasionally brush the coast. All this with heat that will remain very much in check and cool nights. Over the weekend, the sun and calm will finally prevail completely.

The episode of showers and heavy storms in the last few hours has left authentic torrential downpours and records that, locally, have brushed or exceeded 100 l/m², most of them falling in a short time. The thunderstorms affected the northeast in particular during the afternoon, with some downpours accompanied by hail or stones, as was the case in the city of Girona itself. 50 l/m² were reached or exceeded in some cases. But the main event arrived in the evening and at night, when the showers and storms gained strength and extent on the coast and pre-coast of Barcelona and nearby areas, such as Central Catalonia, as well as in the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands. In regions such as Barcelonès, Vallès Occidental, Baix Llobregat, Garraf, and Alt and Baix Penedès, the rain was falling for hours, with moments of torrential intensity and many lightning bolts and thunder. All this caused floods and many incidents, such as the closure of the Ronda de Dalt in Barcelona and the death of a man dragged by a stream in Garraf. In addition, in the Valencia area, the rain has also caused havoc (you will find all the data and images of the episode at the end of this information).

The sun, the calm, and the intense heat of the last few days are numbered, as this Wednesday a cold front will cross us, causing a notable change in the weather. It will be mainly from the afternoon until the night when downpours and storms will gain extent, especially in the Girona and Barcelona regions, in the Pyrenees and the Pre-Pyrenees. They may discharge with strong intensity and leave some heavy downpours. The north wind will strengthen at the ends and throughout the day temperatures will go down. We are at the gates of a new and clear cooling that in the coming days will bring back the air of the beginning of autumn.

We are leaving behind a very stable weekend, with the sun in almost absolute control and temperatures that have risen progressively, both at dawn and during the central hours of the day, with controlled but more intense heat than in previous days. In fact, yesterday temperatures already brushed 35 °C in Ponent and inside the Ebro valley. A situation that will be repeated at the beginning of this week. Between today and tomorrow there will be a transient peak of heat, with maximums between 34 °C and 37 °C in the warmest areas of the interior. But all of this will be short-lived, as from Wednesday a new change in the weather will arrive that will bring more showers and a new clear drop in thermometers.

The weather remained very stable this Saturday, with some intervals of harmless clouds and a practically absolute dominance of the sun. The temperature rose even more, both at dawn and during the central hours of the day, with controlled but more intense heat than in previous days. In fact, it already brushed 33 °C in the West and in the interior of the Ebro valley, a situation that will be repeated this Sunday, which has begun with generally warm temperatures.

We have left behind a very peaceful and radiant National Day of Catalonia and we are entering a weekend that will continue to be marked by fresh mornings, mild midday temperatures, and sun, although with some nuances in the form of intervals of clouds. At the beginning of next week, we will have a transitory warm peak, but subsequently, we will experience a new drop in temperatures and a possible new episode of showers.

We are in for a very pleasant, radiant National Day of Catalonia to take advantage of, with very few nuances. Temperatures will remain normalized, with plenty of morning coolness and bearable heat kept in check during the middle of the day. Therefore, and as already happened this Thursday, 30 ºC will only be reached or slightly exceeded in parts of the south and in Ponent. The weekend will be similar, with small changes on Saturday, but quite calm and sunny in general. Thermometers will rise slowly, both by day and by night, but always far from extremes. At the beginning of next week we could have a transitory warm peak, which would not last long. We have set our path towards autumn, and, except for transitory peaks, there is no sign that would make us think of a return of extreme summer heat.

Yesterday's rains are now history. From today on, the sun and calm will return to dominate, with north winds still in the extreme areas. But pay attention when you leave the house first thing in the morning, as the air is suddenly cooler everywhere, and even cold in mountain areas. A good sweater is needed to start the day in many regions, while on the coast there have been no tropical minimums recorded anywhere for the first time in a long time. And even though the maximums will rise after Wednesday's thermal drop, the heat will be kept at bay and normal for the dates throughout the week at midday. Therefore, today we are noticing the first airs of an autumn that, now yes, is already approaching. Let's take the opportunity to open windows and cool down the houses. Summer is leaving and the historic heatwaves will not be repeated.
