After the first 10 years since the spin-off from Abertis, marked by acquisitions and rapid growth, Cellnex is entering a new phase. It is now focused on concentrating on its core businesses, selling off non-core ones, and delivering returns to its shareholders. With the Benetton family, through Edizione, leading the capital; followed by TC, owned by activist investor Christopher Anthony Hohn; and the Singaporean fund GIC, its CEO in Spain, Alfonso Álvarez, a telecommunications engineer who has worked there since it was an Abertis subsidiary, does not rule out participating in any consolidation process within the telecommunications tower business and emphasizes the group's ability to provide service even during an unprecedented blackout.

The rollout of 5G has become one of the driving forces behind Catalonia's digital transformation. This technology has not only boosted the development of major cities but has also contributed to improving connectivity in rural areas and less densely populated regions. Telefónica has played a leading role in this process: it is currently the operator with the most extensive 5G coverage in the country, reaching almost the entire Catalan population and a total of 701 municipalities across the four provinces.

The pandemic also put on hold the presentation of some of the projects linked to 5G that the Catalan Government was to announce at the cancelled Mobile World Congress (MWC) in 2020. The first masked edition of the congress has contributed, therefore, to recover some of the projects with which the Generalitat wants to become "world capital" of this technology. President Pere Aragonès made it explicit on Monday during his visit to the Catalan stand at the fair, where he stated that the fifth generation of mobile networks "is already a reality".
