Lluís Mendo is a firefighter, but he doesn't put out fires; he responds to traffic accidents. In fact, one in every five emergency services this force provides is specifically to assist people trapped in a vehicle due to an accident.

"Ten people will die on the roads next month and they don't even know it yet." With this forcefulness, Commissioner Mònica Luis, head of the General Mobility Commissariat of the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan Police), summarizes the tragedy that regularly occurs on Catalan roads. This year, 62 people have lost their lives on the road. These are heartbreaking deaths, "of someone who doesn't return home and to whom you haven't been able to say goodbye." And many are preventable deaths, often caused by distractions from phones and screens, speeding, or alcohol or drug use. "We can all do more," Luis concludes.

One person died and seven others were injured—two seriously—when a reckless driver collided with six vehicles that were stopped in a traffic jam on the AP-7 near Vilablareix, in the Gironès region. This is the first fatal accident this Easter in Catalonia, given that the return operation begins at 12 noon this Sunday, during which approximately 580,000 vehicles are expected to be returned to the Barcelona area by midnight tomorrow, Easter Monday.

Tragic night on Catalan roads. According to the Catalan Traffic Service (SCT), this past Carnival night there have been five traffic accidents on Catalan roads that have caused the death of six people. "They are all very dramatic accidents, among the victims and the injured there are many young people under 35 years of age," lamented the director of the Catalan Traffic Service, Ramon Lamiel, who has shown "maximum concern" about the increase in young victims.
