This is emphasized by activist and artist Alpe Conceptes, who since he was a teenager during the late Franco era had been active in the Barcelona scene—where he met those who were the great figures in the community's struggle—and who, under Dutch law, had formalized his union with his male partner before a notary in 1910, a ceremony that ended with a family meal. Years later, in 2000, the couple separated and returned to the notary to rewrite their respective wills. At that time, same-sex marriage was not on the social agenda, and Llucià Ainsa lived her homosexuality behind closed doors, far from LGBTI demands and struggle.

Although the majority of MEPs voted in favour of the initiative, 12 of the 13 PP MEPs (including its leader, Dolors Montserrat) chose to abstain. The only one who did not was Esteban González Pons, the group's vice-president, who did support it.

But, finally, the organizers of the event have canceled it as a result of violent protests by far-right groups (who have assaulted the headquarters of the entity and have assaulted journalists) and after finding that the government, security forces and the influential Georgian Orthodox Church had turned their backs on them.

The country's Parliament has passed a law that prohibits talking about homosexuality in schools or include content that is considered to promote homosexuality or sex change among school materials or television spaces aimed at minors, including advertisements. The law has been approved thanks to the absolute majority of Fidesz, the party of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, and has also received the support of the far-right Jobbik, while the rest of the opposition has chosen not to participate in the vote.
