They are fished throughout the Mediterranean, although in recent years it has been said that, due to ocean currents and climate change, they might have spread to other seas. However, the red shrimp has only one homeland: the Mediterranean.

However, of the approximately 190 trawlers in Catalan ports, 80% are currently moored, unable to set sail each morning. These are dozens of boats that are not putting to sea because, a month and a half before the end of the year, they have exhausted their quotas. quota days set by the European CommissionOr they have very few left and are rationing them until the end of the year to extend the season as much as possible before the Christmas season. All of this has left hundreds of sailors unemployed and the skippers without income on land. Faced with this situation, the sector feels suffocated by quota regulations, fishing bans, and restrictions, and complains that the numbers simply don't add up for them to continue in the profession.

They represent the last generation of a town that lived from the sea, in conditions that were nothing like those of today, when boats were made of wood, barely propelled by the first combustion engines. L'Estartit was a small town of humble houses facing the Medes Islands, without a dock or breakwater, before the great urban transformation by the tourism boom of the 1960s and 1970s.

The fact is that today in Catalan fishing ports we find fishermen lighting the fire in their pans and casseroles to cook all kinds of dishes. For the Virgen del Carmen, July 16, the towns of Portlligat and Sitges honored their patron saint with the finest festivities: they paraded the Virgin on a boat at sea, and the fishermen prepared dishes for neighbors, friends, and family. We tried them and told you about them.

La Barceloneta is in four-story apartments, that is, a two-story house divided into twenty-eight-square-meter apartments. La Barceloneta is life on the street, with meals delivered to your doorstep. La Barceloneta is where Alba Aguilera (Barcelona, 2001), Montse Catalán (Barcelona, 1975), Esther Jorquera (Barcelona, 1987), and Marina Monsonís (Barcelona, 1979) work or live. They explain how they fight against the paellas and frozen sea bream sold on Passeig Joan de Borbó (a name they don't like), against the macha tea and chicken shops. teriyaki And above all, against monoculture tourism. La Barceloneta is where the four women have become friends, tied together by many ropes from a single net they weave with strength: they want to preserve the essence of a fishing neighborhood.

The new European law which imposes a 40% reduction in trawl catches by 2025 has set Catalan and Valencian fleets on the warpath. Fishermen warn that the regulation endangers the continuity of one in two boats, according to calculations by the president of the Catalan federation of guilds, Antoni Abad. "We cannot keep boats that can only go out 120, 150 or 180 days a year, depending on the type of boat. We must to be allowed to work and we must all be allowed to do so equally", claims the fisherman, who also warns that if their demands are not met they will have to organise "more protest actions" because the entire fishing sector "is in danger".
