My daughter is stable but not cured. She's at a point where her life isn't in danger, but the eating disorder (ED) is still very strong, and there are times when living with it becomes difficult.

From one day to the next and without warning, patients with eating disorders (ED) of the Bofill Clinic in Girona They have stopped receiving financial aid to finance their treatment. In total, eighteen families are affected, and since the end of 2024, they have no longer received the monthly benefit that allowed them to cover practically all the costs of this private clinic in Girona, which offers a day hospital service for cases of anorexia and bulimia. This is the aid from the school insurance, which depends on the Ministry of Social Security and covers boys and girls up to the age of 28 who are enrolled in compulsory education.

Eating disorders (ED) have doubled among Catalan teenagers since the lockdown due to the Covid pandemic. Diagnoses have increased especially among girls between 10 and 19 years old, regardless of their socioeconomic level and family situation. However, anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorders are not only the domain of children and adolescents. The Catalan health survey indicates that there are currently more than 85,000 people who suffer from some type of ED. All these data were revealed last October, within the framework of a Sant Pau Talks in which, through several professionals from the hospital's ED unit and the witnesses of some of its former patients, the causes and personal and family effects of this group of mental illnesses were addressed, as well as the phases of their journey and the importance of this cure.

M. is 13 years old and suffers from severe anorexia. She looks like a 10-year-old girl because she is malnourished: she weighs only 34 kg. In the last eight months she has been admitted twice to the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu and her mother, Núria Busquet, is desperate. She complains that the public health system excludes the girl from receiving the treatment she needs because she is not old enough to be admitted to one of the two public mental health units, where only people over the age of 16 are admitted. Nor can she take advantage of the school insurance that would reduce the costs to access a private clinic, where they do admit children with eating disorders (ED), because this guarantee is limited to students from the third year of ESO. She is still in second grade. Her recovery, says her mother, is at a standstill.
