The events took place on Thursday, August 13, at five in the morning at the Camp de Golf tram stop, and both the victim and the aggressor were returning from a nightclub. According to Alicante Entiende, the victim tried to flirt with the second and he attacked him. "It was a brutal response to an affectionate approach between two men," denounces the association, which asks for "justice, truth, and reparation".

But it wasn't just any vanilla: it came directly from Mexico, the territory where this product originates and from which colonizers exported it to Europe five hundred years ago. It was twelve tons of vanilla making the same journey: leaving Jalisco and traveling on board a maritime container to France, then boarding a truck and being transported to a logistics center in Barcelona, the last stop before the final destination, an isolated farmhouse in Almenar, in El Segrià. But what were twelve tons of Mexican vanilla essence doing on a farm far from everything and with a swimming pool in a Lleida town of 3,000 inhabitants?

Police officers who hit demonstrators in non-violent and legitimate mobilizations – such as the massive protest last Sunday in Palma, against overpopulation and «turistification» – do so protected by the anonymity of their helmets and badges: they are not people with a face and a name, like citizens, but rather there is a conscious effort to give the police officer who represses citizens an aspect as dehumanized as possible. This is well known, studied, and denounced. The other great instrument of concealment for the repressive police officer is corporatism. This is the foundation for the development of police accounts that, to put it mildly, clash with or contradict reality. That they lie, to put it bluntly. They know they can do it because corporatism, a kind of misunderstood and perverted camaraderie, makes it impossible for a police officer to ever dare to report the bad practices — and whoever says bad practices, says crimes and offenses — of their less exemplary colleagues. The National Police of Palma has produced a report on the events of Sunday evening in which they do the usual: victimize themselves and state that they had to resort to charges to "defend themselves" from "violent demonstrators" who caused "fear". The song of individuals who like to line up as muscular cabinets, armed to the teeth and trained for whatever may come, who claim to feel intimidated and scared to death by defenseless demonstrators who – in the case of Palma – do such fearsome things as sing La Balanguera. It is tiring, above all, because it is a lie. From the police of October 1st to those of Altsasu, including those who have been in charge of repressing pro-Palestine demonstrations with batons, they all claim to feel deep fears when they have to confront the unleashed hordes of violent demonstrators. The reality, repeated over and over again, is that the provocative, aggressive, and – if necessary – violent elements in demonstrations and other citizen protest events are the police officers themselves. This is what happened in Palma, where there were more than twenty injured, including a photojournalist who had to receive six stitches in his head. The police attacks were unjustified. And, above all, intolerable.False police reports and statements – and, when necessary, false declarations before courts by police officers and high-ranking officials – are repeated because the political leaders do nothing about it (they are afraid, these ones). The government delegate in Palma, Alfonso Rodríguez, is asked to resign. He should also present it due to his incompetence in having done the dirty work for the tourism businessmen and the PP and Vox Government chaired by Marga Prohens. They have achieved the objective of tarnishing a demonstration that was as powerful as it was civic, and on top of that, they can blame a socialist government delegate. They probably think they have made a masterstroke, but more or less everyone sees through them (this does not mean that the delegate must resign, of course).

At the start of the trial this Tuesday, the Barcelona Court has excluded from the case the crime against workers' rights that the unions were pursuing and which could have led to sentences of up to three years in prison. The Prosecutor's Office requests the disqualification for 12 years of those who led the ministry at the time and accuses them, like the police unions, of having "paralyzed" the vaccination of these agents and not prioritizing them over the general population, as they did with other emergency services. Among the figures provided by the accusers is the vaccination rate of the agents: at a time when the vaccination rate was 2.8% among civil guards and 3.6% among national police officers, it reached 77% among the Mossos d'Esquadra and the Barcelona Municipal Police.

Episodes of police brutality, like the one that occurred last weekend in Valencia, when a police officer attacked a protester without reason and from behind at the teachers' assemblies, always constitute a direct attack on the foundations of democracy. Since the so-called state security forces and bodies are delegated the management of violence (they are the only ones who can carry weapons, and use them, in public spaces), when one or more police officers turn against citizens and use force against them, the act causes consternation and repulsion. The use of force is only justified in very specific cases, which are legislated, and none include repression against people exercising their right to demonstrate and protest.Scenes like that of the retired teacher who is pushed face down to the ground by a national policeman are intolerable. The images are unequivocal, so the reaction should also be: swift expulsion from the force for this officer, in addition to any criminal responsibilities they may incur for the assault on their victim. Instead, however, as always happens when something of this nature occurs (I mean: every time a policeman assaults a person suspected of not being a good Spanish patriot, according to the well-known parameters of Spanish ultranationalism), a swarm of politicians and journalists suddenly appears to cover for the policeman in question and to twist reality. It doesn't matter that it's recorded by a lot of cameras and that everyone has seen it: the denial machine kicks in and quickly twists reality, in order to present the victim as the aggressor and the aggressor policeman as an exemplary servant of public order (and as a victim, if necessary). A protester who receives a brutal push when she is with her back to her aggressor, when she was doing nothing remotely punishable and who obviously cannot defend herself from an armed and uniformed policeman, becomes in a certain official version a “element of tension” or an “alterer of social peace”. This is what has been done by the president of the Valencian Generalitat, the very unworthy Juanfran Pérez Llorca, and a long list of usual mariachis from the press close to the PP and Vox. The abusive policeman (who, incidentally, the first thing that should be done to him is a drug and alcohol test), on the other hand, becomes little less than a hero.Or a hero without palliative care: the police officers of 1-O were decorated, and a few dozen paraded through the trial of the Procés to give easily verifiable false testimony about the events of September 20 and October 1, 2017. The Altsasu police officers involved in a bar brawl were exalted as victims of terrorism, while eight young people were sentenced to high prison terms for terrorism offenses. This, to mention just two recent cases that many of us remember. Abuse of authority is, for certain defenders of the homeland, a way of winning ten to zero.

It is an event that is on the social but also political agenda, to the point that it is speculated that Juanma Moreno Bonilla decided to move forward the Andalusian elections so as not to coincide with the election campaign. It is about the visit of Pope Leo XIV to the State, where he will stop in Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands. This Monday, the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande Marlaska, presided over the general meeting of the security device in Madrid, in which the director of the police, Josep Lluís Trapero, also participated. As the minister explained in statements to the media, collected by the ACN, the visit will involve the deployment of 11,000 national police officers, in addition to 2,200 Civil Guard agents. In a few hours, the Mossos d'Esquadra have also committed to reporting on their device. "I was able to prove my innocence," José Ángel González told reporters as he left the courthouse. The complainant's lawyer, Jorge Piedrafita, recounted that during his testimony before the judge, the former DAO accused the victim of having "stunted a trap" and called her "envious, hysterical, and crazy." Legal sources added to ARA that, regarding the alleged incident, González justified his actions by saying that while she was telling him no, he was making gestures indicating yes. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska appointed him to the top police command position, replacing José Ángel González, who resigned when it became known that he was under investigation. allegedly for sexually assaulting a subordinateThe vacancy for the position of Deputy Director of Operations (DAO)—which in practice means being the number two in the force—opened seven days ago, and Santafé submitted his application. Since González's resignation and while the new police chief was being chosen, the position had been temporarily filled by the deputy director of human resources, Gema Barroso. Finally, Marlaska chose Santafé at the suggestion of the director general of the force, Francisco Pardo; a political leadership position and the only one above the DAO.

Santafé is 61 years old and has held various positions throughout his career in the force, which began in 1990. As an inspector, he worked in public safety, the judicial police, and immigration matters, both in Madrid and the Balearic Islands. In 2005, Santafé was promoted to chief inspector and in 2012 to commissioner. With this rank, he served in the Canary Islands and again in the Balearic Islands, where in 2020 he reached the highest rank in the police force—that of chief commissioner—and since 2022 had been the chief superintendent of the regional police headquarters. During this time, he worked alongside the current Secretary of State for Security, Aina Calvo, who served as the Spanish government's delegate in the Balearic Islands between 2020 and 2023.

Two weeks after a female officer filed a complaint against him for alleged rape at his official residence, José Ángel González—who resigned when the judge summoned him to testify—is attempting to discredit the audio recording accompanying his defense. He argues that the recording "does not support" the complaint's account, but rather introduces elements that "demonstrate a very different relationship" between them: "It reveals a prior personal relationship of trust, in which complicity, intimate contact, and mutual verbal interaction are evident," states the document, which he has submitted. He argues that the conversation shows an "emotional dynamic" that is "incompatible" with the "alleged scenario of violence" described by the victim and maintains that the audio reveals there was no "scenario of pressure," but rather an "outburst of jealousy," a "clear demand for attention," and a "demand for exclusivity."
