Upon arrival, the librarian confessed that she was a little worried about whether enough people would come. In an attempt to reassure her, I mentioned that, in my experience, the smaller the town where a cultural event is organized, the more people are guaranteed to attend. Both the librarian and the Town Planning Councilor—who had been kind enough to replace the Culture Councilor, who was unwell—interrupted me briskly. "The thing is, Llorenç del Penedès is a special case." They didn't mean it was a rather apathetic town, quite the opposite: both assured me that it's a town with a huge cultural activity, very active, and that they were afraid the book club would coincide with some other scheduled event. "Sometimes we're forced to look bad in someone's face because we don't have to choose one of the activities that coincide," lamented the people of Llorenç.

Then, from the adjacent apartment, Bintou Jarju and her children, Arlet and Sam, ages 12 and 10 respectively, appear, looking as if they've gone to bed late. It's Santa Fe, and the city is celebrating. Sam is in the band Diablos, and Arlet enjoys the concerts more, I'm told. During the photo shoot for our report, diverse physical features compose the images: Dolors is rather short and pale, while her daughter Bintou and the children—who are Catalan-Negalesan—have dark skin and are on the tall side. How is it that even now so many prejudices are placed on such naturalized differences in this family?

Francisco Vera is a Colombian activist and founder of the environmental movement Guardianes por la Vida (Guards of Life). A new voice representing future generations. With thousands of followers on social networks and active in several mobilisations, he has now taken a step further by attending his first UN Climate Summit, the COP26 in Glasgow.
