Both operate within the murky realm of populism, the far right, and militarized and militarizing neofascism. Both have been disastrous rulers for their countries, leaving a trail of fraud and theft, as well as a horrifying number of deaths. We're not talking about executions, but rather preventable deaths. Many of the 229 Valencians who died during the devastating storm of October 29, 2024, could have been saved if Mazón had been in his proper position, adhering to and enforcing protocols, instead of spending the entire afternoon in a private room at El Ventorro. Similarly, many of the more than 700,000 Brazilians who died during the COVID-19 pandemic could also have been saved if Bolsonaro had listened to medicine and science, instead of appearing on television mocking and mimicking the drowning of sick people. Because of their negligence, their ineptitude, their denialism, Mazón and Bolsonaro are rulers who are responsible for the deaths of the citizens of their countries, which makes them criminals: the Brazilian was sentenced to 27 years (but not for his management of the pandemic, but for attempted coup d'état); the Valencian is under judicial investigation.

Bolsonaro is being held in a 12-square-meter room with a single bed, a small table, a television, and wooden shelves, according to images released by the Federal Police. The decision to begin serving his sentence comes after Bolsonaro's defense team waived its right to file further appeals, for which it had until Monday. The initial appeals had been unanimously rejected by the four members of the Supreme Court's First Chamber, which is responsible for the case.

The far-right leader had been convicted for the attempted coup of January 2023Just yesterday, Friday, Bolsonaro's lawyers requested the Supreme Court to allow their client to serve his 27-year prison sentence for attempted coup under house arrest due to health reasons. However, officers transferred Bolsonaro to police custody, following orders from the Brazilian Supreme Court, which decreed the former president's preventive detention to "guarantee public order," according to EFE. His son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, had called for a large rally of Bolsonaro supporters this Saturday in front of the former president's home. A very brief statement from the Brazilian Federal Police reported that they had carried out, this Saturday in Brasília, "a preventive detention order in accordance with a decision of the Supreme Court," without mentioning the person arrested. According to local media, Saturday's preventive detention does not mark the beginning of the sentence's execution, which was expected in the coming weeks after the Supreme Court rejected the first appeals against the verdict. Instead, it appears to be a preventive detention order. On September 11, Bolsonaro was convicted by the Supreme Court's First Chamber. to try to "perpetuate" himself in power with the support of former ministers and military commandersAfter losing the 2022 elections to the progressive Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the country's current president, the seventy-year-old far-right leader had been under house arrest at his residence in Brasília since August 4 for violating a series of precautionary measures in this case. In the coup trial, the Supreme Court also ordered the preventive detention on Friday of Congressman Alexandre Ramagem, a Bolsonaro ally who was convicted in the same trial as the former president. Ramagem reportedly fled to the United States last September through the state of Roraima, bordering Venezuela, and then through French Guiana. Ramagem, the former director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency, received a sixteen-year prison sentence in a closed regime for the crimes of criminal organization, coup d'état, and the violent abolition of the democratic rule of law.

As we know here, putting the justice system at the service of political interests subverts the democratic principle of the separation of powers. But it's a transgression that some people happily commit if they can profit from it. When the trick backfires, it seems like a "judicial dictatorship," which is what Bolsonaro and his supporters are now denouncing.

The conviction for the assault on the country's main democratic institutions also affects seven of Bolsonaro's allies, five of whom are military officers. This is the first time in 140 years that military officers have been punished for attempting to overthrow democracy.

This Tuesday, the second chamber of the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF), made up of five judges, began an unprecedented trial. But it did so without the former Brazilian president, who cited health reasons for not appearing before the judge. This is the most significant trial since the country's redemocratization, due to the public officials involved and because six of those tried are or have been military personnel (there are three generals and one admiral). It even surpasses that of Lula da Silva, imprisoned for corruption, which prevented him from participating in the 2018 elections, which precisely brought the far right to power, a process from which he was acquitted and the case closed.

The five judges scheduled to deliberate on the matter voted unanimously to prosecute Bolsonaro and seven other defendants, including high-ranking military officials and former members of Bolsonaro's administration. The trial date has not yet been set, but it will take place in the First Chamber of the Supreme Court. If convicted, Bolsonaro could face a lengthy prison sentence.
