In a very subtle way, the references hinted at the bewilderment caused by that precarious and tacky staging: the emeritus king, motionless and expressionless as always, superimposed on a vigorously waving Spanish flag, in a format worthy of the YouTubers the most sordid aspects of the digital world.I want to leave a brief message for young Spaniards"," he began. More than complicity, allegiance. More than allegiance, submission. Juan Carlos was a head of state who took advantage of his position (obtained from Franco, as he himself explains in his book, without a trace of shame for this reason) to conduct business for his own benefit. But the most relevant thing is that he did this with the acquiescence or willful blindness of everyone: the successive left-wing and right-wing governments, the judiciary, the Tax Agency (which he systematically defrauded), the business associations, the Church (which never saw anything reprehensible, as much as the monarch's scandalous conduct seemed to please the elite), and, of course, the media, which maintained, willingly or by force, a pact of silence on everything related to the Crown.

But with whom does Juan Carlos want to reconcile? With one of his lovers? With all of them? With his family ("they don't care about me anymore," he laments)? With the subjects (and taxpayers) of the Kingdom of Spain? With the Spanish Treasury, which he repeatedly and consistently defrauded while he was head of state? With the international lobbies with whom he has done business throughout his life and who now shelter him in Abu Dhabi? (Shelter him while the subjects and taxpayers of the Kingdom of Spain continue to foot the bill.) It hurts to say, and everything indicates that the book is not going to clarify this.

The former president of Cantabria learned the news on Tuesday while playing his first acting role in the filming of a movie by Antonio Resines. And the first reaction was one of "rage" and "anger": "Why me?" he asked this Wednesday at a press conference at the headquarters of the Regionalist Party of Cantabria (PRC). The party's secretary general denied having committed any crime and made it clear that he does not regret his "permanent denunciation" of the emeritus, which he has made in recent years and which he once again reflects on in his latest book: "He is harsh with the king, but he deserves it," he said.

The monarchy, with the support of the PSOE and the opposition of the triple right, wanted to turn this week the fortieth anniversary of the coup d'état of 23-F into a way of vindicating the discredited figure of the king emeritus. According to the official story, the actions of Juan Carlos I put a stop to the tejerazo and saved the then young Spanish democracy. But the attempt has remained just that, an attempt. Not in vain, Felipe VI's father has long since fallen into disgrace on his own merits. He can no longer be saved by the sweetened epic of that distant episode. The emeritus has lost the popular support that for years surrounded him and made him an institutional pillar of the State; now the monarchy cannot find a way to overcome the crisis of legitimacy in which it is immersed. For years Juan Carlos I has been squandering the credit he had earned during the Transition, to the point that the accumulation of scandals led him to have to abdicate and finally go into exile in a shameful escape to Abu Dhabi, where he still resides and from where, thanks to the passivity of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor and the Tax Agency, he is manoeuvring to escape his tax crimes. If last December he paid the Treasury up to 678,393 euros to avoid a tax investigation into the opaque cards, this Thursday it has been learned that he has made a new payment of 4.3 million to avoid what would be a fraud in the Treasury of 120,000 euros. It is clear the favored treatment that he continues to receive. And that makes any restoration impossible, not even moral.

However, he wanted to show all his support to the current head of state, Felipe VI, with the same "rotundity", for the "exemplary decisions and the good use of the resources" of the son of the emeritus. Despite his "resounding rejection of the uncivic behavior" of Juan Carlos I, Sánchez has denied that he is acting in this way thanks to inaction on the part of the Tax Agency, since Juan Carlos I has been able to avoid a tax crime because there has been no complaint by the Treasury. "The professionalism and autonomy of the Tax Agency cannot be questioned at all. In this I want to be very clear in the same way that I have expressed in a resounding rejection of the uncivic behavior", he said.
