While the winner of this year's Nobel Prize in Literature was announced on Thursday, László Krasznahorkai, another award winner, Abdulrazak Gurnah, spoke to journalists from a hotel in Barcelona to talk about his new novel, A long road (Salamander). Gurnah, who was born in Zanzibar in 1948 and has lived in London for over 40 years, was awarded the prize in 2021. The jury valued his work because it takes a "rigorous and moving approach to the effects of colonialism and the fate of refugees at the intersection of cultures and continents." A long road, the first novel he's published since being chosen by the Swedish Academy in 2021, tells of the friendship between three young people in 1990s Zanzibar who, from very different backgrounds, try to escape.
