In fact, the Spanish police are now practically only investigating one of the hypotheses: a track breakage would have caused a derailment of an Iryo train traveling towards Madrid, which collided with an Alvia train that was moving in the opposite direction at that time.

"This exceptional confirmation comes after significant public interest. No further details will be made public at this stage," stated the European Public Prosecutor's Office in Madrid. This EU body is responsible for investigating crimes that may affect the EU's financial interests. In this case, according to EFE, the investigation seeks to determine whether there was embezzlement and misappropriation of European aid in the use of European funds. SER reports that the investigation is looking into whether there was misappropriation in the management of the more than €100 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) allocated to these works. The Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, has confirmed that the European Public Prosecutor's Office has been investigating the accident since it occurred. In his opinion, the agency intervenes in "all cases involving European funds." "For whatever reason, it's being presented today as a major development, but it isn't," he stated in a social media post. On January 30, European prosecutors Luis Miguel Jiménez Crespo and Juan José Navas Blánquez requested from the Ministry of Transport "all signed contracts and the corresponding file numbers related to the section of the railway network where the accident occurred." Meanwhile, the investigation into the causes of the accident is being conducted by an investigating court in Andalusia.

The Emergency Medical Service (SEM) evacuated two of the injured in serious condition to Vall d'Hebron Hospital, one by helicopter and the other by ambulance, and the third with minor injuries to Josep Trueta Hospital in Girona. During the day, a boy and a girl were discharged from Trueta and Vall d'Hebron, respectively. The third injured student, a fourth-grade boy, remains hospitalized in the burn unit of the Barcelona hospital. According to sources consulted by ARA, the class was conducting the so-called "volcano experiment" outside the school. During the experiment, which is usually done with a plastic bottle containing a mixture of ingredients such as baking soda and vinegar, the bottle burst, and the liquid splashed onto some students, causing burns to three of them.

The black boxes of the two trains that crashed on January 18 in Adamuz (Córdoba) reveal that between the derailment of the Iryo train and collision with the Alvia trainOnly fifteen seconds passed, according to a statement released Tuesday evening by the Railway Accident Investigation Commission (CIAF). Specifically, the black boxes provide information about the most critical 43 seconds of the accident, between 7:43 p.m. and 7:44 p.m., when the two trains collided while traveling below the permitted speed (250 km/h). The starting point where the Iryo train derailed and occupied the other track (from the Loma del Partidor Norte tunnel to the Adamuz South switch) coincides with the "track where the rail fracture was located," the CIAF indicates. The investigation states that at 19:43:29 hours, an electrical disconnection of the train's motor occurred, "the first anomaly detected as a symptom of the derailment," while fifteen seconds later (at 19:43:44 hours), the Alvia train's black box "stopped recording." This moment, therefore, "presumably corresponds to the moment of the collision between the two trains," according to an initial analysis of the black boxes, which reveals that the derailment triggered an automatic emergency braking of the Alvia through the LZB safety system (a railway safety system). Temperature alarm

According to the CIAF (Spanish Railway Infrastructure Manager), the disconnection was presumably related to "voltage disturbances or a lack of contact between the pantograph and the overhead contact line," being the first anomaly detected as a symptom of the derailment. At the time of the disconnection, which occurred through the opening of the circuit breaker, the Iryo train was traveling at 205 km/h. Four seconds after this first derailment, the Iryo was on track circuit 645, but a temperature alarm was registered in the grease boxes of car 8, "presumably because it was already derailed." "This alarm triggers the activation of the train's brakes, and the train is braking," the CIAF reports, adding that at 19:43:37, eight seconds after the derailment, switch A645 was not checked.

This network comprises 3,000 kilometers, used by more than 40 million passengers last year. The same must be done with the commuter rail network, bearing in mind in both cases the need to restore services to full normality as soon as possible and with the necessary guarantees. It is a matter of responsibility. On the one hand, the smooth operation of transportation—including high-speed rail—is a necessity, not a luxury, and on the other, risks must be minimized. Besides establishing the causes of accidents—which in the case of Gelida are especially clearer than in the one from AdamuzWhat must be guaranteed is that proper maintenance of the network is carried out.

The wall was inclined at approximately 45 degrees, encroaching on the train's path, and became embedded in the driver's cab. Although it is a straight section of track, the report adds, the driver did not see the wall in time because it was nighttime and raining. According to data from the train's data recorder—the black box—the driver had very little time to brake before the impact. Approximately five seconds elapsed between the start of braking and the collision, during which the train traveled about 50 meters. At that moment, the train was traveling at approximately 60 kilometers per hour.

All levels of government, including the Spanish government, "have risen to the occasion," Marín emphasized during his turn to speak, expressing his gratitude for the suspension of the plenary session initially scheduled for yesterday. Hours later, the Andalusian president himself chose not to engage with Isabel Díaz Ayuso's criticism of Pedro Sánchez's administration: "We recovered two bodies three hours ago. I'm not one for controversy; there will be time for an investigation later." The Andalusian PP's strategy serves to clearly differentiate itself from the national PP and, above all, from the Madrid president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who has stated that a "code of silence" has been imposed following the accident to cover up the Zapatero issue and has even suggested that the Andalusian and Spanish governments agreed to arrange the victims' funerals in Madrid.

The train was traveling between Gelida and Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, heading towards Barcelona. The victim was a young trainee train driver, as confirmed by the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police). The victim was at the front of the train, inside the cab, with the lead driver and other trainees, according to Fire Department Sub-Inspector Joan Rovira. He was born in 1998 and his family lives in Seville, the Catalan police reported. As a result of the accident, all commuter and regional train services have been suspended until at least 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, when a crisis meeting will be held to assess whether service can be resumed. In any case, there will be no trains running at the start of the day.

Investigation teams are working with all hypotheses open, but have concentrated on several rail breaks detected along the stretch of track where the accident occurred. In an interview Monday night on TVE, Transport Minister Óscar Puente admitted that, indeed, "there are pieces of broken rail in several places." "We have detected an initial break, but the crucial question is whether it is the cause or the consequence of the accident," the minister explained. In other words, the teams are now trying to determine whether the rail broke at some point and this caused the derailment, or whether, on the contrary, the train's derailment and the subsequent collision—and the dragging of all the rolling stock—damaged the tracks.

The weekend was already particularly difficult, with a tanker truck overturning and causing road closures near Baix Ebre. This Tuesday, the epicenter was also in the same southern region, and it was again a truck that, for reasons under investigation, crossed the median of the motorway, colliding head-on with another heavy vehicle traveling in the opposite direction and also affecting a third truck that tried to avoid them. The driver of the first truck died in the accident. The accident caused closures in both directions that lasted for hours, with traffic jams exceeding ten kilometers. Around midday, one lane in each direction was reopened, improving traffic flow.
