Jesús Sánchez explains that the person who rented them the plot had deceived them all along and has now fled. "We called him, but he didn't answer. He's gone," he says. The riots in the Cerdanyola neighborhood of Mataró a week ago have put the city government, the PSC (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party), and En Comú Podem (Common People's Party) on the ropes. In coordination with the Ministry of the Interior, police presence in the neighborhood—with high poverty rates and 26% of residents of foreign origin—and the identification of young people has been increased. This heavy-handed strategy has been criticized by the Housing Union and several anti-racist organizations in the city, who believe that the PSC has preferred to assimilate its discourse to that of the right and far right instead of paying attention to the social unrest following the protests.

There were incidents on Wednesday and Thursday of last week, but also this Monday and Tuesday. Some of these young people claim they are the ones who set fire to a container and threw eggs at the police. One fourteen-year-old even claims he ended up arrested on Tuesday night. Now, history is repeating itself in Mataró: on Wednesday night, police arrested a person trying to occupy a home. The arrest led to street protests and four nights of clashes in the Cerdanyola neighborhood of the capital of Maresme. So far, the total is eight arrests and around twenty containers burned.
