For years, sociologist Elisa García-Mingo has immersed herself in the study of the machosphere, online communities that spread misogynistic content, whether through ridiculing comments and messages or by asking artificial intelligence to reinvent photographs of women to undress them.

With the highest data of young people who despise feminism And amid the offensive of far-right rhetoric against equality policies, the 8M demonstration kicked off this Sunday in Barcelona – promptly at 11:30 a.m. – for International Women's Day. This year, the feminist movement sought to confront the reactionary wave and warn of the rise of the far right and conservatism, which sends messages contrary to human rights that until now were thought to be inviolable. "I'm out for the same reasons as always, but now it's more necessary than ever: the world, what has happened and what may happen, is frightening," explains Teresa, one of the 24,000 demonstrators – according to estimates by the Barcelona City Police – who took to the streets of Barcelona.

Feminism is in retreat. Half of young Spanish men (51.5%) believe that feminism "is only used as a political tool for manipulation and indoctrination," according to the latest Youth and Gender Barometer published this Tuesday by the Fad Youth Foundation. Almost a decade has passed since the emergence of the Me Too movement and the massive demonstrations that placed feminism in its fourth wave, but today the population between 15 and 29 years old identifies as less feminist than their older counterparts.

For six years, Mia Moglie (My Wife, in Italian) was a public Facebook group where men posted photographs of their partners, without having given the consent, in which they appeared sleeping or on the beach. Although Meta, the social media company's owner, had long received complaints for allowing posts that violated the right to privacy, it wasn't until feminist Carolina Capria and the organization No Justice, No Pace reported it on Instagram that the page was shut down. Up to 32,000 men had shared images, some accompanied by sexualizing or degrading comments and retouched with artificial intelligence.

With the far right gaining ground in parliaments and governments and women's rights threatened around the world, we spoke to four women who are fighting against this regression of rights in four areas: sexual and reproductive rights, labour rights, the rise of sexism among young people and new forms of hatred. Feminism and feminists as a dam against anti-rights discourse.

Coinciding with the fourth wave of feminism, far-right parties have gained strength around the world, forcing women to build strategies of disobedience. From Africa to the Americas, and also in Europe, where hate speech and anti-women's rights rhetoric grows with each election, partly thanks to the power of social media.

March 8 is a good time to take the temperature on parity. In Europe, despite the pressures and the increase in power of the reactionary far right, it can be said that on paper the laws defend equality, although in the rest of the world, women are prohibited from marrying whoever they want, deciding about their own body or dressing as they want. Madrid has not been spared from the storm that has been affecting the State for days, but that has not been an impediment for thousands of people to fill the most central streets of the Spanish capital this Saturday, when 50 years of the Official Declaration of International Women's Day are commemorated. A little after 12 noon the demonstration organised by the 8-M Commission started. Umbrellas and raincoats have been the allies of the thousands of people, the vast majority women, to resist the rain that fell and that although it has made it difficult to start the march, it has not stopped it. Little by little, the demonstrators have gone up Paseo del Prado with slogans such as "We feminists are here" and have headed towards Plaza de Cibeles. Once there they have crossed Gran Via, one of the main arteries of the city, to be able to finish the demonstration in Plaza Espanya. According to the first calculations of the organisation, more than 80,000 people attended the demonstration. "Rain or snow, feminists move," was heard at one point during the demonstration.

This Saturday, the feminist movement is preparing for another major mobilization for Women's Day, March 8. If rain permits, the agenda is full of rallies and demonstrations in cities and towns throughout Catalonia, as well as a labor and care strike called by the CGT union at workplaces. The novelty in Barcelona is that, for the first time, there will be two demonstrations, as has been the case for years in Madrid. This is due to the division of feminism over issues such as the regularization or abolition of prostitution and the rights of trans people. The rain as a metaphor of patriarchy threatened the day of the happy resumption of the International Women's Day mobilisations but, in the end, feminism prevailed for a few hours. Up to 15,000 people –the vast majority women of all ages– paraded through the centre of Barcelona in the movement's first demonstration since pandemic restrictions were lifted.

The second International Women's Day since the pandemic began will focus this year on denouncing how the coronavirus crisis has aggravated job insecurity, violence against women and discrimination against migrant women. The improvement of epidemiological data and the end of restrictions has allowed Catalonia's 8-M Assembly to leave behind the format of static rallies and instead bring back marches through the centre of Barcelona.

"I accepted myself", "Everything fit", "I discovered myself for the first time": LGTBIAQ+ people have very different stories, but most of them agree that their lives changed the day they met someone they could identify with. They remember it as a "liberating", happy moment; which at the same time contrasts with the disapproving looks, insults and aggressions that many of them also report having suffered for not fitting in with the norm. In this report we make visible some of their lives at the moment of expansion of the collective.
