The announced change in weather is now here, which will mark the end of this episode of intense and atypical heat that has accompanied us during the first week of September, with temperature records. The passage of a cold front will complicate the meteorological situation and will make today an unstable day, with irregular downpours and storms that may be intense and leave some torrential deluges, with a risk of local flooding and sudden rising of rivers and streams. The area most affected will be the coast and pre-coast of Barcelona. The clash between cold air at high altitude and the intense heat accumulated over so many days can leave very significant downpours, which is why a large part of the country is on alert for intense rain. In fact, between the early morning and the first hours of the morning, heavy rain has affected the Garraf, the Baix Llobregat, the Penedès, and the north of the Vallès Occidental and Oriental, with a lot of electrical activity. Even so, the precipitation has moved quickly and has not left large accumulations for the moment. For example, more than 20 l/m² have already accumulated in a short time in Cunit, in the Baix Penedès.

The atypical and historic heat that has accompanied us at the beginning of this month is numbered, with weather that will already start to change on Tuesday and a temperature that will begin its descent in some points. It will be on Wednesday when we will notice the change in weather, with intense rain, wind, rough seas, and a lower temperature everywhere, with an environment more typical of the meteorological autumn.

The nightmare of this atypical and historic heat is numbered. This Monday we will no longer reach 40 °C in the Ponent area, although it will still be very hot. The drop in the thermometer will be slight, around 3 or 4 degrees in some places, enough so that no more records are set. However, it will still be hot, with highs around 38 or 39 °C in Ponent and in the interior of the Ebro. From this Sunday it is worth highlighting new exceptional values, not at all common in the month of September, such as 42.5 °C in Vinebre and 42.3 °C in Torroja del Priorat.

The temperature rose clearly yesterday Wednesday, when it exceeded 35 °C in many inland points and new heat records were registered in a month of September, as in the case of the Fabra Observatory, where the 33.6 °C measured is the highest value since 1914. All of this is the prelude to an exceptional heatwave that will cause the temperature to be well above the climatic average, with forecasts of registering new temperature records in the coming days.

The widespread feeling this summer has been one of unbearable and endless heat, which is even extending into this early September. The Meteorological Service of Catalonia published this Wednesday its seasonal report for the meteorological summer – which ends at the end of August – and certifies that, indeed, this year's has been the warmest since records began. The average temperature for the country as a whole registered a thermal anomaly greater than +3.0 °C with respect to the reference period 1991-2020 in over 80% of the territory, while some locations, such as the western Pyrenees or the plain of Vic, have reached +4.0 °C above normal values for the time of year. Meteocat highlights that the twenty historical data series in the country, those exceeding 75 years of data, have recorded the warmest summer in their series, “and this result shows that the temperature record does not correspond to the exceptional behavior of a specific sector, but rather has occurred in a generalized manner across the entire territory”.

Meteorological autumn began on Tuesday with very calm weather, dominated by the presence of clouds that, from midday onwards, gained ground, although they did not leave any precipitation. The mercury relaxed a bit, with maximums of 32 ℃ or 33 ℃ where it was hottest, but from this Wednesday onwards the situation will reverse and the temperature will rise notably. We are expecting a second half of the week with thermal values well above the climatic average for early September, with no significant cooling in sight.

Mercury again exceeded 35 ℃ this Monday, as it did over the weekend, but in general the temperature remained around 29 ℃ to 33 ℃. These are typical values for the end of August that will also accompany us into early September, with heat that could intensify more from mid-week. On the horizon there is no early autumn rain storm, but also no extreme off-season heatwave.

The mercury rose above 35 ℃ again this Sunday, after a fairly cool night everywhere, although less so than Saturday. The temperature will remain with few changes this week, with controlled heat, without excesses, and the weather will also not experience significant changes. On the horizon there is no early autumn storm, but neither is there any out-of-season heatwave.

Mercury once again exceeded 35℃ this Saturday, after a quite cool early morning everywhere, even on the coast, a situation that will be repeated this Sunday. The week will end with a very calm day with no new developments, marked by a temperature that will tend to rise progressively and by a sun that, although it has already lost many minutes compared to the end of June, is still the protagonist.

The mercury dropped much shorter this Friday, after a Thursday with highs of over 36 ℃ or 37 ℃ in Alt Empordà, El Segrià and in points of the pre-littoral, and it barely exceeded 32 ℃ or 33 ℃ where it was hottest. However, a weekend awaits us in which the temperature will recover and the sun will once again be the protagonist, with no risk of precipitation.

The mercury climbed eagerly this Thursday, with highs of over 36 or 37 ℃ in Alt Empordà, Segrià and points of the pre-coastal area, but this thermal rise has limited hours because in the coming hours we will experience a notable drop in temperature. Subsequently, however, it will gradually rise again, always around the climatic average and without extremes.

We have left behind a Wednesday of very calm and stable weather, with two very distinct faces: a very cloudy morning and an afternoon with a lot of sun. Thursday has started with a repeat of the play and some cloud intervals, but the sun will assert itself much more quickly and give way to a much more pleasant and warm day. We find ourselves immersed in a thermal roller coaster, as after this thermal rise there will be a drop in temperature on Friday, while the weekend will be warmer again.

This Tuesday's weather was radically different from Monday's, with a clear dominance of the sun, and this Wednesday the novelty will be the presence of clouds that will be abundant during the morning, but which will lose the battle against the sun during the afternoon. Nevertheless, only a few isolated and unimportant drizzles are expected.

The Atlantic disturbance located west of the Iberian Peninsula left downpours and hailstorms during Monday afternoon, in some cases with large hailstones and violent gusts of wind (you will find a summary of the storms at the end of this article). This Tuesday, however, will be a radically different day, with much more stable and calm weather and no precipitation.

In the collective imagination, there has long been an almost direct relationship between the high temperature the sea reaches during summer and the possibility of torrential downpours in autumn. This thought, combined with the experience of the devastating dana that affected the Valencian Community in the autumn of 2024, makes it not unusual to wonder if such an extraordinary episode of torrential rains could be repeated this year.

The Atlantic disturbance located off the coasts of Portugal and Galicia will send a front that will generate unstable weather in our territory this Monday. While the first part of the morning has been stable, from midday the panorama has changed radically and storms have gained ground, affecting a large part of the west and north half by mid-afternoon. Showers of moderate to strong intensity are expected and the possibility of hail or hailstorms in many places, especially in the northern half and the northwest quadrant (you will find a provisional summary of the storms at the end of this article).

The weekend has been marked by quiet mornings and unstable afternoons, with locally intense showers and thunderstorms that in some cases have left more than 50 or 60 mm. Good news after a very dry July and early August in a large part of the territory. The temperature has also relaxed practically everywhere, although intense heat has been maintained on the coast. Next week will begin with increasingly intense heat, but from the middle of the week a change in weather will arrive that will lower the temperature and leave more widespread precipitation.

The mercury has relaxed across the board after a few days of intense heat and this Saturday it reached 36°C or 37°C where it climbed the most. Normal values for the season that suggest a cooling down because we are coming from very high temperatures. Storms were also the protagonists during Saturday afternoon and evening in many places, especially in the northern half and the center of the country, where they were locally accompanied by hail. Notable are the 50 mm accumulated in Artés, in Bages, the 34 mm in Sant Pau de Segúries, in Ripollès, and the 33 mm in Gisclareny, in Berguedà. On Sunday afternoon, instability will already be decreasing and less extensive and intense showers will form.

This Friday the atmosphere was again very suffocating, with many highs of 35°C to 40°C even in coastal areas, but with higher values in Ponent and the Ebro valley, such as 41.5°C in El Canós (Segarra), 41.3°C in Vinebre (Ribera d'Ebre) or 41°C in Lleida and Alcarràs (Segrià) and Tàrrega (Urgell). They also brushed against 40°C on the Barcelona pre-littoral. Such extremely high temperatures will not be repeated this weekend, with thermometers dropping. We are coming from so high that the heat of full summer will continue, but it will be less intense and far from 40°C. All this with an increase in instability. Showers and storms will gain ground and intensity, mainly in the pre-littoral, inland and in the Pyrenees. But these showers could reach some coastal areas. No such extreme heat episode is foreseen in the medium term and by the end of next week the atmosphere will be much more bearable.

The weekend has been marked by calmer weather than in previous days, although instability continued to be the protagonist of the afternoon in some regions, especially on Saturday, when showers and thunderstorms in the Pyrenees, pre-Pyrenees and the regions of Ponent left, locally, more than 50 or 60 l/m² and wind gusts of 100 km/h.
