The full summer atmosphere that has accompanied us for days is leaving thermal records that, in some cases, have never been seen in the middle of May. The United Kingdom, France, and Cantabria and Asturias in Spain are some of the places where unusual values have been recorded in a heatwave with few precedents, both for its date on the calendar – at the end of meteorological spring – and for its intensity and persistence, with many days widely above the climatic average. Also in Catalonia, in recent days, temperatures more typical of early July than of May have been reached, with thermometers approaching 35 °C in some territories.

The mass of warm air over the Iberian Peninsula and all of Western Europe has for days been leaving us with an atmosphere more typical of early July than May, with heat records in Spain, France or the United Kingdom. An exceptional episode that gives no respite, and in the coming days will reach its peak, with a warm peak that will leave values approaching 38 °C in Ponent and will transport us directly to the summer heatwave. The combination of a mass of warm air and the persistence of the anticyclone have caused us to leave behind an exceptionally warm April across the country, the warmest ever recorded at 104 out of the 122 stations of the Meteocat Automatic Meteorological Station Network, which have over 20 years of data. The head of the Climatology area of Meteocat, Marc Prohom, highlights that this atmospheric pattern has driven warm air from North Africa towards Catalonia, causing such high temperatures in the middle of spring.

The passage of a line of instability reactivated showers and irregular storms on Thursday, although they were more irregular and localized than initially forecast. All of this is the prelude to a long May Day weekend that is proving to be very changeable and with new irregular showers in some areas, although nowhere near everywhere. This is the case of Lleida, where the 9.5 ºC on Sunday midday contrasts with the 25 ºC on Saturday at the same time. In a few hours we have gone from this feeling of advanced spring to one more typical of late winter, especially in high mountains, where it will continue to snow during the next few hours. In addition, showers will affect more regions as the hours pass and will affect the eastern half of the country during Sunday night and Monday morning.

The mass of warm air that has accompanied us all week has sent the mercury soaring across the country, with temperature values exceeding 30 °C for three consecutive days, a situation unusual at the beginning of April that reminds us that summer is approaching. These high temperature readings were not concentrated only during daytime hours, but it has also been hot at night. Specifically, the night from Thursday to Friday was the one that recorded the highest lows, with the first tropical night of the year in Catalonia (the second earliest since records began). The award for the first tropical night of 2026 goes to Portbou, in Alt Empordà, where the heated tramuntana wind prevented the mercury from dropping below 21.6 °C, values more typical of June or July.
