This would be the sentence that summarizes the figure of the Duchess of Kent, Katherine Worsley by birth, Kate to most of those who knew her throughout her long life. She was related to the most central core of the Windsor family since she married in 1961 the Duke of Kent, grandson of King George V and a prince with the consideration of royal highness who, besides being Duke, was also Earl of St Andrews and Baron Downpatrick. Her presence in this controversial and problematic family was always valued. And this, despite representing what for a large part of the aristocracy at the time was a sacrilege: a commoner in the palace!

In August 2024, what was initially interpreted as a domestic dispute involving Marius Borg Hoiby soon led to an assault complaint, which was not the last. That incident, which initially interested the gossip press more than anything else, later became an international political issue with the four consecutive arrests of the young man, who was then 26 years old. Each step of the investigation further revealed the seriousness of everything that had been happening within the Norwegian royal family with Hoiby. The young man is not formally a member of the monarchy, but since he was four years old, when his mother married the heir to the throne, Haakon, he has lived as if he were part of the royal family.

And this is thanks to the Spice Girls, who this week celebrated thirty years since they turned the world upside down with their triumphant appearance: a single called Wannabe. They were the dose of modernity that pop needed at the time. A group of empowered friends –when no one used this adjective yet– singing an ode to friendship and to putting a stop to sexism. All this in a dance-pop format and with a whole associated British aesthetic that was then synonymous with fresh exoticism.

And it's worth emphasizing the latter because their love story had always been marked by ups and downs. By highs and lows that sooner or later they always managed to resolve, until last summer, when the decision was firm. The magazine ¡Hola!, to which they had granted an unprecedented report to talk about their love story in October 2024, confirmed the breakup, citing sources close to the couple and in which the media had full informational confidence.

If before she went to Stradivarius and bought polyurethane boots that peel on their own for her closet, now that she's gotten rich, what she does is go back to buy the same boots but in all colors. The truth is that when I see them so worked up against the gossip press, I think how I wish there was a way to suddenly and completely make the fame of these so-hunted celebrities disappear. It would be very, very funny to see how, perhaps a month after failing to make a living on their own by any chance and not feeling recognized anywhere, they would do anything to regain their lost status. "And is this news?" is the question we often see in the comments of news about gossip magazines and pop culture. This has happened in Europe on some occasions. Perhaps one of the most remembered is that of King Baudouin of the Belgians, who, together with his wife, Fabiola de Mora y Aragón, did not succeed, and the throne ended up being inherited by the monarch's brother, Albert, who was already 60 years old when he acceded to the headship of the Belgian state. If that case was sad because, despite trying, they unfortunately could not have children, the current case of Thailand is more convoluted, in which King Rama X has had 7 children and not one is suitable for the position, which will remain vacant when he is gone. And he is already 71 years old...

And I'm not saying that because it looks bad, let's not jump to conclusions. In fact, it's the opposite. They've performed a complex exercise in aesthetic medicine and have managed to make this screen legend, at 72 years old, turn back the clock a few years in terms of facial sagging without losing much naturalness. Or without losing as much as would have been predictable... The problem has therefore been that this new face they've given him has stolen all the spotlight from an artist who had no need to go through this media show at this stage of his professional life.

Precisely her, yes. None other than the woman who, in the mid-nineties, was world-famous and from whom we had heard almost nothing since. A woman who, in the eyes of an entire generation – very possibly unfairly – is the one who least comes to mind when we think of the concept of mother.

As is tradition, the event brought together at the MNAC representatives from sponsoring companies, institutions, and celebrities from the social, cultural, and political world of Barcelona and Catalonia to rally for a common cause: to raise funds to finance the research of the Fundació Lluita contra les Infeccions, an internationally renowned institution in clinical research of infectious diseases. The initiative, whose alma mater is Doctor Bonaventura Clotet, president of the foundation, has once again demonstrated its intact power of attraction and its fundraising capacity, which reached 838,769 euros, a very notable figure that makes this solidarity gala the most powerful in Spain.

This would be the summary of what is happening with the Met Gala. When something as niche as this, which until not so long ago only a few fashion enthusiasts knew about, ends up being a topic of interest for people who the rest of the year do not consume any other type of content about this discipline, it means that the end of the genuine version of this event has arrived. A spectacle that the mainstream does not have the tools to understand, because it does not know the references of each aesthetic decision that is produced there – or even because it opines that fashion is not art... – , cannot be the property of the mainstream. At least if the will is for this spectacle to continue being what it has always been.

Unfortunately, however, it is only the summary that best defines the contribution of the son of Luis Bárcenas to current affairs in recent days. And it is that this young man of little media shame and generous loquacity has starred in a double appearance in the media this week. A double contribution that in both cases has revolved around his parents' house, located on the very posh street Príncipe de Vergara in Madrid. From what he has explained, it seems that in that very Salamancacore enclave, very strange things have happened over the years. Some, according to his testimony, could have been the fault of spirits, and others, of the Popular Party. Presumably in both cases, obviously. Well, surely in one case more presumably than in the other. But I wouldn't dare to say which one...

Both inside and outside the United Kingdom. Some remember her starring in a state visit to their country, others by how she was dressed at the wedding of one of her four children, others inaugurating a new political year in the British Parliament, others enjoying the Ascot horse races, and others simply accompanied by her corgis... And it is that the continuous exposure in the media throughout her life, the particular image of a normal, everyday woman that she projected, and her adherence to all the most Victorian traditions – to which she never gave up –, made her a person who was equally approachable and unattainable. That is to say, someone memorable, one of the greatest assets a monarch can aspire to.
