We leave behind a weekend marked by the change in air masses that has swept away the warm bubble and suspended African dust, with the entry of cold at altitude. All this has caused a clear cooling, as well as strong storms in various regions, especially during Saturday and early Sunday morning. A much more comfortable atmosphere - with bearable summer heat at midday and cool at night - that will still hold today. But this respite will not continue, as in the coming days a new irruption of warm North African air will push thermometers above average, with the return of intense heat. By mid-week, temperatures will reach 40 ºC again in western Catalonia.

The passage of an upper trough has changed the weather in recent hours. Thunderstorms have discharged with intensity due to the generation of large convection clouds fueled by cold air that has dropped from more northerly latitudes. This clash of air masses with very different conditions has contributed to intense showers, accompanied by electrical apparatus, hail, and sleet (for example, yesterday afternoon, in Arbúcies). Until mid-afternoon on Saturday, we had already accumulated up to 35 l/m² in Sant Llorenç Savall and between 15 and 30 l/m² around the Montseny massif.

Yesterday we experienced the last day of extreme heat of the week. Temperatures dropped inland, but still reached 38 or 39°C in Ponent, the Tremp basin, or the Pre-Pyrenees. It will be this weekend – the last of July – when the arrival of a clearly colder air mass will sweep away the warm bubble and the suspended African dust, with a north wind and a clear drop in thermometers.

The extreme heat has given a little respite this weekend, with very high values, but without the records of a few days ago. Throughout the week, temperatures will rise and the peak of the new episode of extreme heat will arrive, which will be even more intense than the previous ones. However, the presence of thin clouds or suspended dust can dampen the radiation and prevent the thermometer from soaring so much in the end. We are fully at the gates of what will be the third heatwave of the summer, when we will not have even recovered from the second one. Its peak will arrive between Wednesday and Friday. The stuffiness will make it impossible to rest on the coast, with torrid nights. In Ponent or Ebre, thermometers could reach or exceed 42°C maximum in the middle of the week.

Yesterday, Saturday, many observatories in Ponent again brushed 38°C, with a lot of sultriness on the coast, due to low clouds. From today, temperatures will rise again and a new heat episode will begin. We are on the verge of what will be the third heatwave of the summer, when we will not yet have recovered from the second. The suffocating atmosphere gives no respite and after the sultriness we will again suffer a new influx of dry African air, with predicted values of up to 28°C at 1,500 m. This situation will cause thermometers to exceed 40°C again in many areas.

The core of the warm air mass affecting us these days continues to move away towards Eastern Europe and its effects will begin to weaken from today due to the passage of a frontal tail. In fact, during Sunday afternoon and night, showers appeared, especially in Ponent and the Pyrenees, which brought little precipitation and strong gusts of wind. However, the thermometer still rose considerably this weekend and the heat peaks have been notable, with a maximum of up to 39.4 °C yesterday in the city of Lleida or 38.8 °C in Albesa, in La Noguera (at the end of this information you will find the highest maximums reached yesterday).

The mass of warm air that is affecting us these days is losing strength and will move away towards the center of Europe. However, the heat is still intense and, once again, we have registered values close to 38°C in some regions of Ponent and Empordà. For example, in Cabanes they reached 38.7°C yesterday and in Lleida, up to 38.6°C. During the rest of the weekend we will continue under the effects of the anticyclonic ridge and the incursion of very warm air and dust in suspension from North Africa. Next week the thermometers will drop, but the latest maps reduce the possibility of a forceful cooling.

Although the heatwave has technically ended and we haven't reached 40°C in Catalonia for two days, the fact is that the heat remains very intense everywhere. Yesterday there was a torrid peak in the northeast, where, as in Ponent, 38°C was reached, in Girona municipalities such as Cabanes, la Bisbal d'Empordà or the Darnius-Boadella reservoir. A suffocating atmosphere with marked humidity on the coast, which will continue throughout this last weekend of June, with values ​​still more than five degrees above the average in many cases. All this with sun, calm and afternoon showers only tomorrow in the Pyrenees.

A new pocket of warm air from North Africa will keep the atmosphere fully summer-like throughout this new week, after highs of 36 or 37 ºC were already reached this weekend in Ponent and the southern interior. This hot air will lower atmospheric pressure and generate a small thermal low that will favor the formation of afternoon thunderstorms, especially in the Pyrenees. In fact, some already reappeared yesterday, accumulating up to 25 l/m² in La Bonaigua (2,200 m, Pallars Sobirà), 15 l/m² in Puigcerdà (Cerdanya), and 3 l/m² in Núria (Ripollès).

A pocket of warm air from North Africa is making the atmosphere feel like mid-summer. This hot air will favor the formation of a thermal low over the Iberian Peninsula, which will cause the thermometer to rise and also form afternoon thunderstorms in the Pyrenees. This weekend, thermometers are generating highs higher than what would be expected for this time of year, with values that have exceeded 36°C in Empordà and Central Catalonia. For example, yesterday in Cabanes (Alt Empordà) and Artés (Bages) they reached up to 36.4°C. In Lleida or El Poal, they reached 35.6°C.

Temperatures took a leap forward yesterday and, after a still quite cool and jersey-wearing morning, the heat shot up at midday and became summery, with highs exceeding 30 °C inland, and reaching 35 °C in Vinebre (Ribera d'Ebre). Thermometers will climb even higher this weekend, with a full summer atmosphere and values clearly higher than what is appropriate for this time of year.

This weekend, temperatures once again neared 35 °C in the Lleida plain and the Girona regions, and exceeded 32 °C in the pre-coastal areas. On the coast, the lack of ventilation and intense radiation caused the mercury to climb to 31 °C in Roses. Models indicate that this warm spell will extend for much of the week, with values between 6 and 8 degrees above average in some cases. Thermometers will reach their peak between Thursday and Friday, with a warm surge that will bring values close to 38 °C in western Catalonia.

The anticyclone will keep storms away from our latitudes and the existing pocket of warm air over the Iberian Peninsula is still generating temperatures more typical of early July than May. Yesterday, they again brushed 35 °C in the Lleida plain, as, for example, in Alfarràs and in the Girona regions they reached up to 30 °C. On the other hand, on the coast, the presence of fog banks contributed to the thermometer not exceeding 24 °C or 25 °C in some parts of the Costa Brava.

Catalonia reached or exceeded 35 °C yesterday for the first time this year, and even 36 °C was recorded in very localized areas, with 36.1 °C standing out in Seròs (Segrià). Several municipalities in Ponent and the southern interior surpassed this mark of 35 °C, such as Torroja del Priorat, Albesa (Noguera) or Alcarràs, Alfarràs and Gimenells (Segrià). During the morning, downpours will fall in parts of the northern third and the coast and pre-coast, which will extend to more areas in the afternoon. Thunderstorms have occurred in recent hours, especially in the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, and northeast regions, with more abundant amounts in Berguedà, northern Osona, or Ripollès, where 10 to 20 l/m² have accumulated in a few minutes. Highlights include the 32 l/m² that fell yesterday in Orís, 28 in Montesquiu, or 22 in Cantonigròs. But this instability will not have much continuity, as throughout the week anticyclonic calm and sun will gradually impose themselves, with increasing heat after the significant cooling of recent days.

And the meteorological situation will continue to be unsettled in the coming days, with the passage of new frontal lines that will keep the sky cloudy and showers. Temperatures will be kept in check, and in the Pyrenees, storms will leave snow at altitudes close to 2,000 m. Throughout Sunday, showers left around 5 l/m² in Ponent, between 10 and 15 in the interior of Montsià and few liters or scattered drops in many other places. But the most significant accumulations were concentrated in the Pyrenees, with up to 32 l/m² in Espot (2,400 m), 23 in Boí (2,500 m), 19 in Ulldeter (2,413 m), 16 in Nuria (1971 m) or 15 in el Pont de Suert.

The weather will remain uncertain with more showers. In fact, a good spell of precipitation swept through the south of the country yesterday morning, with accumulations of up to 40 l/m² in Miami Platja (Mont-roig del Camp), 12 l/m² in Tivissa and in the PN of Ports and 11 l/m² in Riudecanyes. Throughout the midday and afternoon, showers continued in the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees, with amounts ranging between 3 and 5 l/m² (in Espot, up to 14 l/m²).
