This hot air will lower atmospheric pressure and generate a small thermal low that will favor the formation of afternoon thunderstorms, especially in the Pyrenees. In fact, some already reappeared yesterday, accumulating up to 25 l/m² in La Bonaigua (2,200 m, Pallars Sobirà), 15 l/m² in Puigcerdà (Cerdanya), and 3 l/m² in Núria (Ripollès).

This hot air will favor the formation of a thermal low over the Iberian Peninsula, which will cause the thermometer to rise and also form afternoon thunderstorms in the Pyrenees. This weekend, thermometers are generating highs higher than what would be expected for this time of year, with values that have exceeded 36°C in Empordà and Central Catalonia. For example, yesterday in Cabanes (Alt Empordà) and Artés (Bages) they reached up to 36.4°C. In Lleida or El Poal, they reached 35.6°C.

This weekend, temperatures once again neared 35 °C in the Lleida plain and the Girona regions, and exceeded 32 °C in the pre-coastal areas. On the coast, the lack of ventilation and intense radiation caused the mercury to climb to 31 °C in Roses. Models indicate that this warm spell will extend for much of the week, with values between 6 and 8 degrees above average in some cases. Thermometers will reach their peak between Thursday and Friday, with a warm surge that will bring values close to 38 °C in western Catalonia.

Several municipalities in Ponent and the southern interior surpassed this mark of 35 °C, such as Torroja del Priorat, Albesa (Noguera) or Alcarràs, Alfarràs and Gimenells (Segrià). A premature heatwave that has caused, once again, the full summer atmosphere to arrive several weeks early. A weekend with a fully summery atmosphere awaits us, with highs around 35 °C in the warmest areas of the country and the first tropical nights. On the coast, the mercury will be clearly more restrained, and some fog or low clouds will appear, but it will be more muggy.

During the morning, downpours will fall in parts of the northern third and the coast and pre-coast, which will extend to more areas in the afternoon. Thunderstorms have occurred in recent hours, especially in the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, and northeast regions, with more abundant amounts in Berguedà, northern Osona, or Ripollès, where 10 to 20 l/m² have accumulated in a few minutes. Highlights include the 32 l/m² that fell yesterday in Orís, 28 in Montesquiu, or 22 in Cantonigròs. But this instability will not have much continuity, as throughout the week anticyclonic calm and sun will gradually impose themselves, with increasing heat after the significant cooling of recent days.

Locally they were strong and accompanied by hail, short-lived, and accumulated little water: most left between 2 and 8 l/m². This weekend will not change this trend and the weather will remain very changeable with new irregular downpours in some areas, although far from everywhere. A typically spring unstable situation that will also continue next week, with temperatures that will gradually decrease and normalize, although still with thermal mildness during the central hours of the day.

All this after yesterday's showers and storms - some of them of a certain intensity - mainly affected points in the northern half and left up to 38 l/m2 in Cadí Nord, 21 in La Seu d'Urgell (Alt Urgell) or 20 in Molló (Ripollès). The downpours even reached - much weaker and more worn out - points on the coast and pre-coast of Girona and Barcelona. And this situation will extend for more days, also for Sant Jordi, with high temperatures for the season and increasing dust in suspension. Meteocat maintains an alert for intense rain in some counties:

In fact, this figure was already reached locally yesterday in these areas. Temperatures will be above the usual average for this time of year, but changes in the weather are coming. The presence of a bit of cold air at altitude will cause daytime clouds to grow more energetically in mountainous areas, and afternoon showers and thunderstorms will increase. They will fall today in parts of the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, and the Els Ports area, and from Sunday onwards they will increase in these areas and nearby zones. A typically spring situation of contrasts that will continue next week.

This Sunday, for example, temperatures already approached 30 °C in Poniente, with 29.5 °C recorded in Alcarràs. The weather will remain spring-like everywhere on this final day of Holy Week and we will enjoy a 'dia de la mona' with temperatures more typical of May than early April. Only some changes are expected at the end of the week, with the approach of a front that could bring showers to the Pyrenees and a slightly cooler atmosphere.

On one hand, we have a high-pressure center over the Bay of Biscay and another over the western Mediterranean. Therefore, the last stretch of Easter will continue to be stable and with clear skies. The change in weather was sudden in these areas on Sunday afternoon and evening, following a generally mild and sunny first weekend of spring. Snow also fell again in the mid and high elevations of the Pyrenees. Between yesterday and early this morning, accumulations of 10 to 15 liters per square meter were recorded in the northern parts of Girona, and 1 to 8 liters per square meter in many other areas, accompanied by some local thunderstorms. In contrast, not a drop fell in the western part of the country and much of the southern half. Today, World Meteorological Day, the weather won't clear completely, but very little rain is expected, and from tomorrow onwards, sunshine and calm conditions will generally return.
